“He’s coming back soon and we’ll meet with him then. I know he’s dealing with his own shit, so I’m grateful he is willing to take the time to help us.”

“When’s that?”

“In three weeks. Our people have until then to get me some useful information. If Alessio gets more information than our people do, I’m going to have to reconsider how lenient I have been. Alessio may be having problems with his people, but I doubt that he will be having them for long.”

I jump down onto the dock. “Get home to your girlfriend. I have some other things that I need to take care of tonight.”

Rio chuckles and wiggles his eyebrow at me. “Going to go see Hadley?”

“Fuck off.” I head down the dock, not wanting to talk about Hadley anymore.

The only thing I’m going home to is a cold shower so I can fuck my fist for the hundredth time while thinking about her.

HADLEY

Kennedy grins as she leans back on the couch and kicks her feet up on the coffee table late one night after a particularly long shift.

“You know, I don’t know if going back to that club for my shift tomorrow is a good idea,” she says as she relaxes into the cushions. “I keep thinking about leaving. Rio has offered to support us both.”

“What does Rio do?” I ask. I take a long sip on my milkshake as I curl up on the opposite end of her couch.

Kennedy’s face pales slightly but she shrugs it off. “He’s Jovan’s enforcer. Right hand man. Whatever you want to call it.”

For a moment, I wonder if she knows what Jovan really does for a living. When she gives me a sheepish smile, it’s clear that she knows.

I thought she would have been smart enough to stay away from the cartel shit. But even as I think it, I know that I’m a massive hypocrite. After everything with my drug-addicted parents, I’m still willing to toe the line of being wrapped up in cartel business.

Although, I didn’t know that I was walking into a cartel-owned business when I applied for the job. I had heard rumors, but powerful criminals owning clubs in Miami is common.

It’s expected.

I’ve spent my entire life around the darkness that comes with the cartel controlling a city. My parents were so deep in the drugs that I started taking care of myself as soon as I could.

It was inevitable that I would end up brushing elbows with the cartel again, even though I’ve done everything in my power to avoid it.

Kennedy didn’t seem like the type, though. She is sweet and bubbly. She doesn’t seem like the kind of woman who would get involved with the cartel.

Yet, if there’s anything that working at The Brazen has taught me, it’s that looks can be deceiving.

Even when I was over a few nights ago and saw Rio, he didn’t seem like the kind of man who is in a cartel. He had smiled politely and offered to order dinner before slinking away to their bedroom to hide for the night.

Nothing about him screamed can kill me with his bare hands and not think twice about it.

My stomach tosses and turns as I look at her, my eyebrows shooting up my forehead. “Are you sure that it’s a good idea to get wrapped up with a member of the cartel like that?”

“Rio and I knew each other before he was ever involved in that stuff. We used to date in high school and then broke up for a few years. I was having some trouble a while back and we ended up moving in together. After that, everything just sort of fell in place.”

“Well,” I say, swallowing my judgment and smiling. “I guess that when you’re meant to be with someone, you just find your way back to each other sooner or later.”

Kennedy beams and nods. “For a long time after we broke up, I couldn’t see myself with anybody other than him. He was my first love. Getting our second chance was great.”

“How do you handle him working for the cartel?” I put my milkshake on the table and twist to lean against the arm of the couch and face her. “I would be scared shitless to know that my man was out there and willing to die for some dictator.”

“I don’t think Jovan is a dictator. You just don’t like him that much because you are two of the most stubborn people I’ve ever met.” Kennedy laughs and reaches out to pat my leg. “You two just need to fuck and get it out of your system.”

My cheeks flame as I glance away from her.
