“Are you saying you want to spend another night?”

“I mean, we deserve a reward for finishing the task, right?”

He chewed thoughtfully on a piece of bacon and didn’t speak until he had devoured the entire strip. “That implies that we get the mission done today.”

“Is that doubt I hear in your voice?”

He snorted. “GG, we’re no closer to finding Méndez than we are to being mates.”

I set my fork carefully on my plate. “Then what you would call last night?”

“A good time.”

“Is that all I am to you?”

Eric placed his breakfast onto the coffee table and scooted toward me. He held my free hand loosely, rubbing my knuckles with his thumb like he had the other morning. It helped to calm me down. Just that fact alone made the conflict inside me double.

With the sexiest rasp in his voice indicating his lingering sleepiness, he whispered, “Do you want to talk about it, darling?”

I gazed into his eyes, ultramarine exploding in his irises and inspiring me to relax. Eyes like that could have convinced me to do anything. He had more magical ability than he wanted to admit.

When I shifted my gaze to my plate, he touched my chin. He lifted my head. He caressed my cheek and wove his fingers into my silky hair. “I had more fun last night than I have in a very long time. Nothing can change that.”

“Except for the fact that we’re not mates.”

“I’m starting to think that’s not a decision we can make.”

My brows wound together. “What do you mean by that? We’re supposed to wait until the weekend is over to talk to Kiara. Isn’t that a choice?”

“Tell me, darling, did either of us actually wait? Or did we just fight against our natural instincts?”

This couldn’t be happening. It was too irritating to think that fate could control every thread of my life. As a user of magic, it wasn’t right. I had enough power to charge a plant and keep it running for a hundred years. Yet I was susceptible to the whims of fate.

How was that fair?

I couldn’t meet his gaze or answer his question, so I sat quietly while he stroked my cheek. Enough of that had me relaxed again—along with something else that made my slit twitch and my entrance ache.

He squeezed my hand, commanding my attention. “You don’t have to answer that now. Just know I think of last night as much more than a hook-up.”

With that, he returned to his space and scooped up his plate like he hadn’t just dropped a whole nuclear bomb on my head. And maybe that was what I needed to kick myself into gear. I returned to my breakfast, savoring every last bite in the communal silence of the porch as I restructured my thoughts.

Last night was over. We had to move forward. Maybe I couldn’t change what happened, but I could adjust my behavior from here. If Kiki was convinced it was just a quick hook-up for a good time, then maybe she wouldn’t be as angry about it.

But that’s not what it was.

Tall tales really could be too tall sometimes. That meant I needed to adjust my height and keep it moving.

Once we both finished breakfast, we lingered on the porch, watching the birds flutter around the yard. I checked my phone for messages—or ideas.

But at this point, I felt lost. “I don’t know how to find him. Vampires aren’t willing to talk to us, apparently.”

“That’s probably my fault.”

“Well, I didn’t want to say that, but…”

He growled jokingly. “I have a menacing aura.”

“I don’t think it’s menacing at all.”
