“How could you do this?”

A sob got stuck in my throat as I tried to wrap my head around what was happening. I was confused. I felt dizzy and sick, and I wasn’t sure how these women got me from Sumter, SC, to Athens, GA, so quickly. Or had I just been knocked out for that long? What time was it?

What day was it?

Destiny gave me a sinister grin. “How could I do this?” She sniffed indignantly. “You know what? It doesn’t matter anymore about the how and the why. Let’s just hope your wolf boy comes running with the things we need.”

“Destiny, please. Have some compassion for yourself.”

“Don’t you dare talk to me about compassion when everyone turned their back on me to give you accolades.”

I was starting to see black spots. No. I couldn’t black out again. I couldn’t lose consciousness because I had so many more questions. What was she going to do to Eric? How was she going to get the amulet from Ander?

What was going to happen after that?

Would Eric show up?

She couldn’t answer that, I thought as darkness stole my vision. And then my hearing. And then my feelings. She’s chosen her side. I have to choose mine.

But what else could I do except sit here and let the shadows swallow me up?

Nothing remained then except the void. My thoughts came freely without me being able to control them, reminding me that Eric had a similar effect on me. Goddess, I missed him. I should have never left his side for a second. If I had stayed behind and bravely faced my best friend, then I would laughing with her and my new partner in a living room while having a beer.

Cowardice wasn’t in my blood, yet I acted cowardly. I kept secrets. I threw out insults. I acted like such a fool when I could have just acted like I cared. No matter how long I had been stuck with Destiny, I knew I couldn’t survive alone. I was powerless against a witch and a wolf together, especially with my limbs tied up.

I was helpless.

And I was probably going to die.

Just when I started completely slipping away, I heard something that sparked the slightest hope inside me. It was so much like the flicker of a flame in the deepest recesses of a cave, a beacon to guide me back to the surface of a mountain. That sound became my light, my tether to the world beyond the darkness.

It was the sound of wolves howling.

It was the sound of my mate coming to rescue me.

Chapter 21 - Eric

Ander responded within minutes of my call. Lucky me that I got to trade numbers with a fang who didn’t fear me. It was definitely something for me to get used to, having a vampire I could call out of the blue, but it was certainly necessary for the occasion.

Within several minutes of Teresa’s threatening call, Kiara and I had gathered a team to rescue Regina. Blake, Jermaine, and Fred came with us to meet Ander just outside of Athens. Speeding cut our time down significantly. Ander had a team watching the witch shop where Teresa had instructed us to bring the amulet.

We had our bases covered. Now, we just needed to figure out how we were going to approach the shop.

Ander met us close to midnight with his team of two vampires. While the two vamps were generally untrusting of my team, they trusted their leader. This was unprecedented. I never thought I would ever be in a position where I had to trust another vampire—but here I stood with the guy that had opened me up to the experience.

He was going to help me save my girl. For that, I owed him more than I could ever possibly give.

Ander met me with a deep bow. “Captain Barrett, it is an honor to meet you again.” He stood upright and offered a sympathetic frown. “Though I wish the circumstances for this meeting were better.”

“I agree, Ander.”

Kiara touched my bicep, a show of support that inspired Jermaine and Fred to relax. Even my alpha seemed to be on edge. This whole thing had us feeling a lot of things. I was grateful I didn’t have to be alone during this process.

However hard it got, I knew my pack had my back.

The elegant vampire gestured to his team. “This is Saffron and Charlie. They monitored the shop while you were on the way. Nothing seems to have changed since your call.”

“That’s good, at least.”
