“Oh-uh-” I stutter my words as I try to come up with an answer.

“It’s okay. You don’t have to lie,” she says, her eyes boring in mine. She still maintains her calm, never losing it, even though I expect her to.

“Yes, I did,” I say like a little boy who’s been scolded by the babysitter he has a crush on.

“So, you went through my phone and you stole the phone numbers of my boyfriend?.”

My heart pounds harder, the fear increasing by the minute. I know what I did was dumb and a total breach of her privacy and trust but I did it in a moment of desperation and weakness.

“Don’t you find it embarrassing? Isn’t it just pathetic?” she asks.

The word hits deeply. I never want to hear it again, mostly because in this case, it’s true about me. I’ve never wanted to bury myself in the ground the way I do now, especially with the way the guys reacted to me.

“Miles called me. He was worried about me and how I was doing because a guy texted him, telling him to stay away from me,” she continues.

My jaw ticks wildly. So that’s why he didn’t respond to my text.

“Do you know you come across as some kind of stalker?” she asks, her eyes still staring right into my soul.

“Don’t ever go through my phone again,” she says, picking up her bag. “Okay?”

All through the conversation, or what was intended to be one, I was in my head, stuttering over one line like an idiot. I am pathetic. The sound of the door shutting as she leaves fills me with even more disgust. Is this how I plan to win her all to myself? All I've done is mess up any progress I had with her.

Anger builds in place of the self-disgust I felt only seconds ago as I stand fixed in the spot where she had left me. I pick up my phone, scrolling down to the message I had sent Miles. I thought he was simply being the quiet person Kelly made him out to be; instead, he turned out to be a snitch.

I type an angry rant rapidly on my phone; my thumb hovers over the send button, but I stop myself. There’s no way to respond to Kelly’s words. My lips droop downward. Does it mean the others don’t consider me to be a threat? Is this why they didn’t even bother reporting me to her?

I scroll through my phone, dialing a number.

“Hello?” Michael’s voice answers from the other end.

“I’ve had the most upsetting day,” I say.

“Hey, Michael. How are you? How was your honeymoon? I heard you were back. I have missed you, my dear friend,” Michael says in a terrible imitation of me.

I roll my eyes. “Hey Michael, how was your honeymoon?”

“Much better. It was wonderful,” he coos, a smile in his voice. “Now, what’s this upsetting day you had?”

“I just don’t know what to do about Kelly, man,” I say. “It’s been three months since we started going out together, and she’s still going out with these other guys. I’m hurt, man. Really and truly hurt.”

“Is it your pride that's hurt or…?” Michael asks calmly.

“Of course, my pride is hurt, but it’s also my heart. I hate having to fall in love with someone. She’s not ready to commit to being fully mine, and that’s what I need from her. The same level of commitment.”

Michael sighs from the other end of the line. “Look, my friend, so far, all I’ve been hearing is what you want but haven’t thought about her. You want her to give you something she’s already told you from the beginning she can never give.”

“But I’ve done everything right, Michael. She’s supposed to be in love with me. She has to be,” I say emphatically.

"That's a very flawed perception, Enzo. You went in this thinking she’ll fall with you and pine after you, but now you’re the one in love and don’t know how to handle it."

“Ugh,” I groan, running a hand down my face. “I feel so pathetic, man. Especially now. I went through her phone and told the other guys to back off; instead, she came here and told me never to touch her phone again. She didn’t even seem angry when she said it."

“Wait! You did what? You took her phone and talked with the guys?!” Michael exclaims.

“What else was I supposed to do?” I ask in frustration. "Clearly, all my charms weren’t working, and she was still going out with them. I needed those guys to back off from her."

“Dude, are you crazy? That’s so disrespectful and creepy. Why would you take her phone?" Michael exclaims.
