But it didn’t.

I tossed and turned all night, wondering why her phone was still off at three a.m.

I woke up the following morning agitated to fuck, and decided to go to her office to confront AJ. He could take the brunt of my anger, whether I get arrested or not, that fucking bastard.

I get that Elizabeth is mad at me, but ignoring me is fucking childish.

Flashing a grin at the same receptionist from my last visit, I went to AJ’s floor.

It was pretty quiet, and I found a woman leafing through a magazine idly, her feet up on the desk before her.

“Hey, sorry to bother you,” I said with a grin, glancing around the empty floor. “I’m looking for Mr West?”

The woman half choked on her coffee, spilling it down her front in the process.

“Shit! I mean, ah, shit!”

“No worries. Can I grab you a towel or something?” I offered, glancing around me, wondering where the hell I would get one of those from.

“Huh? No, I’m okay. Sorry, who did you say you were?”

“I didn’t.” I cocked my eyebrow at her. “Do you know Elizabeth?”

“Yes, but you could be a psychopath. I’m not telling you anything,” the woman said, dabbing at her shirt with a bunch of napkins she’d dragged from her drawer.

“True, but I’m not. My name is Reign.”

“Michelle.” The woman gave me a little wave before staring at me slightly longer than necessary. “How do you know Elizabeth?”

Michelle frowned at me, and I decided to trust her.

“Well, we’re seeing one another.”

Michelle gawps at me, her cheeks burning as she checks me out for the second time.

“What?”

“You sound surprised.”

“Oh, I just…” Michelle waves me off. “Sorry. Wow, nice to meet you.”

I arched my brow and grinned as she flushed. “Likewise. Right.” I nodded to the chair between us. “Is this her seat?”

“Yes. Except she’s been off for a few days with a bad tummy. Which is why I’m surprised you’re here.” Michelle eyed me somewhat suspiciously.

“A bad tummy?” I repeated, my eyes boring into hers.

“Well, that’s what Mr West said she called in with.”

Oh, that makes sense.

Maybe she called in sick so she could visit family.

“Where is Mr West anyhow?” I muttered, noting the empty office across the hall.

Michelle frowned.

“He’s ill, too. But, I mean, he said they both went out the other day for lunch, so I bet they ordered the same dish or something. You know?” Michelle fell silent, then looked back at me. “Hey, haven’t you spoken to Elizabeth?”
