I can see that laughter is not the response she’s expecting because she presses her lips together and tries to back away from me. But I have her where I want her, and I don’t intend to let her go.

“You’re laughing? Nice.” Her brow furrows, and I know I need to turn this around before she gets the wrong idea.

“PJ, relax. No, it’s not mything.”

She manages to wrench her hand out of my grip and turns enough so that she can cross her arms. I wish I wasn’t so turned on by how feisty she gets when she’s annoyed because it’s making me reluctant to clear up the confusion, and that makes me an asshole.

I’m used to people thinking I’m an asshole, but I don’t want to be an asshole to her. Not ever.

“PJ, I swear. That was for you. Only.” I quiet my voice and wait for her shoulders to relax. The wheels turn in her head, and I can see she’s still calculating something. She doesn’t fully believe me.

“How did you time it so well? Are you just some kind of expert on women’s bodies, so you know you can get me off inthe time it takes to fly here once you’ve passed the Golden Gate Bridge?”

The wheels clank into place in my brain, but I feel dumb again. This time, for a different reason. I rub a hand over my face, wishing it could have the effect of wiping the slate clean and rolling back time to a few minutes earlier.

“No, that’s not what happened up there. It wasn’t about calculations or timing or somethingI have about women in helicopters. You are the first. And that’s because you’re the only woman I’ve ever wanted so badly that I couldn’t wait until the damn bird landed to get inside you. And trust me, as far as timing, I just got lucky.”

She inhales a deep breath and lets it out slowly. All the muscles in her shoulders and neck unclench, and she drops her arms by her sides.

When the elevator doors open, I reach again for her hand. She looks down when she sees I’m handing back her panties. Her eyes meet mine, and she raises an eyebrow. Bending down to slip them over her feet, she works the scrap of fabric up her legs slowly, lifting her skirt to show me every bit of what she’s covering up before dropping it over her hips and folding her body against mine. I exhale a shaky breath and wrap my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close.

This woman.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to go all paranoid on you. It’s just…you know I’m…this is new for me. I’m not used to this much…I’m not used to feeling this good.”

I have so many things I want to say to that, so much venom for the men who came before me for not giving PJ every damn thing she deserves, in the bedroom and outside of it. But I also realize they did me a favor because I get to do all those things for her. For the first time.

“Well, I hope you’re up for getting used to it because I want you to feel this good all the time.”

“When I’m with you, I do.”

Chapter

Nineteen

PJ

“We have a noon reservation,” Colin says, striding down a quiet hallway that looks untouched except for giant framed photos of telescopes lining the walls. The gray pile carpet crunches beneath my feet, and the air smells like fresh paint.

Holding my hand, Colin shuttles me along at a brisk pace as though we’re late for wherever we’re going. “Reservation for what?”

“Lunch.” He looks at me. “Sorry, I assumed you’d be hungry. Guess I should’ve asked.”

“No, lunch is good. When did you make a reservation?”

He holds up his phone. “The magic of technology. All the cool kids are doing it.”

I roll my eyes, but I’m intensely amused. Not by his dorky humor but by how comfortable he seems here. Since we left the elevator, we’ve walked down several hallways, turning so many times I doubt I could find my way back if I had to. The building is huge and sprawling, but even though it’s clean and spartan, it doesn’t feel sterile. No idea how he manages to accomplish that, but it’s one more quality that’s uniquely Colin. One more quality I really like.

“Is this area new? It feels like no one’s ever walked on this carpet.”

“Yes. We just built this wing for our new labs.”

“I’m surprised no one’s here on a Tuesday. Didn’t you say you work every day?”

“Yes.”

“Are you the only one who works here?”
