“I know you do,” I replied, and I did know it. “But I’m good. I promise.”

“I’d feel better if you weren’t lying to me.” Again, Lennon wasn’t one to hold any punches.

“I’m not lying,” I lied. “I’m semi-lying.”

“I’ll take it,” she quickly compromised.

“I’ll call you this weekend, okay?”

“You better, or I’ll send Crew to go get you.”

That wasn’t an empty threat, and no one wanted Crew Marlow looking for them.

“Wow, that’s harsh.”

“What good is it to have a secret weapon if I can never use him?”

“Good point,” I conceded.

“Love you,” she said.

“I love you, too.”

After hanging up, I got comfortable on the couch, then turned on Ancient Aliens. Now, while I didn’t believe in aliens, the show was entertaining with its crazy alien theories.

I also did my best not to think about Killian Warrick.

Chapter 6

Killian~

I was used to long days, but today felt longer than most. As contradictory as it was, I hated charity dinners. I hated socializing with rich pricks that were only in it for positive publicity and a tax write-off.

Everything that I did, I did it with a very specific purpose behind it, and that purpose was always my sister. I didn’t do this for tax reasons or so that the press would print only nice things about me. I didn’t do it because I had some divine sense of nobility. Everything that I did, I did because I saw my sister in every victim that reached out to my organization, and not just the women. I saw her circumstances in everyone.

Ellie had been fortunate enough to have a supportive family and partner to get her through what she’d gone through, and there were too many people out there who didn’t have that same luxury. We had a lot of calls from people that were alone in their fight, and there was such a sad hopelessness to that.

So, going to charity dinners, galas, auctions, etc. annoyed the shit out of me because most of the attendees were there with no real care for what was going on in the world around them. No one cared until it happened to them, and once upon a time, I’d been just like them. I’d been a twenty-something that cared about nothing but the plans for his future. I’d been self-absorbed in my own life enough to convince myself that the world’s problems weren’t my own, but I’d been proven wrong in the most horrific way.

After tossing my black tie on the bed, then removing my jacket, I grabbed my phone. Even though it was late, I knew that Ellie would still be up.

“Hey,” she greeted after the third ring.

“Hey,” I greeted back. “Whatcha doing?”

“I just put the kids to bed,” she answered. “I keep having to remind them that it’s not summer break for me and Jamie.”

That got a soft chuckle out of me. “It could be if you and Jamie would quit being stubborn.”

“You’re insane if you think that my husband would ever not work or take care of his family,” she huffed. “Your millions are going to end up going to the boys if you don’t hurry up and get married.”

“My millions are still going to go to the boys, even if I do get married, Ellie,” I pointed out. “There are plenty of them to go around. Trust me.”

“Your money’s a good thing, Killian,” she said, and not for the first time. “It helps you do things that no one else wants to do.”

“I don’t know about that,” I muttered, thinking about my conversation with Posie.

“What do you mean?”
