“I’m a human that can turn into a wolf. Almost everyone who lives in Aspen Ridge is a shifter, though they’re not all wolves. There’s different kinds of bears and other animals too.”

I stare at him unblinkingly, and he starts to talk faster.

“I belong to the Aspen Ridge Pack here. I left for the military and came back. Everything else that I told you is the truth, but I didn’t want to freak you out when we first met.”

“Okay,” I say, trying to process all of this.

“There’s one more thing,” he says, and I brace myself.

“What’s that?”

“You’re my fated mate.”

“Your what?”

“My fated mate. All shifters have a fated mate, the one person they’ll love forever. They just have to find them and claim them. You’re my mate. I knew it the moment that I smelled you.”

“Smelled me?” I ask, my voice rising slightly.

“Yeah, as a shifter, I have better smell, sight, hearing, and healing than you do as a human. I heal a lot faster and can see further, hear better, and smell things more clearly than you.”

“So, I’m…”

“You and I, we were meant to be. We were literally fated to be together. You are the only one for me. I’ve never loved anyone else before I met you, and I’ll never love anyone else for the rest of my life.”

I like the sound of that…

But this is all crazy. He sounds insane. How can I believe any of this?

“I can prove it,” Davis says, jumping to his feet, and I startle, staring up at him.

“How?”

“I’ll shift for you. Come on.”

Without waiting for me, he turns and heads outside. I follow him slowly and walk out onto the front porch to see him standing there, peeling his shirt off.

“Um, what are you doing?” I ask, looking around for an escape plan when it turns out that this dude is crazy.

“If I shift with my clothes on, I’ll just rip them. I have to strip.”

“Cool. Cool, cool, cool,” I babble.

He gives me a worried look as he starts to unbutton his pants.

“I’ve never lied to you, baby. This isn’t a lie either. This attraction that we have, the connection between us, it’s real, and I know you can feel it too.”

I can. He’s the only man that I’ve ever wanted, that I’ve ever felt attracted to. Maybe what he’s saying is real. Maybe we really are meant to be. It would explain why I feel so comfortable around him so fast.

“Are you ready?” Davis asks, his hands on the waistband of his boxers.

“Um, sure.”

He nods, holding my eyes as he pushes his boxes off. Then he’s naked before me, but I don’t dare look down. I maintain eye contact as he takes a deep breath and steps back.

Then, right before my eyes, he starts to change. Fur covers his skin, and his teeth and nails elongate. I hear some cracking, and then, in just a matter of seconds, Davis is gone and a giant wolf is there in his place.

“Holy shit!” I shout, backing up until I hit the wall behind me.
