“Good, well, there are only a few restaurants in town, but a steakhouse just opened a few months ago, and it’s supposed to be amazing.”

“Sounds good.”

He takes off, and I spend the ride to town staring at him and the scenery going by. I haven’t really looked around downtown Aspen Ridge yet.

“Have you already been to all of the little shops downtown?” Davis asks me.

“Not yet. Today is only my third day here. I wanted to stretch my legs and look around the mountain first.”

“I’ll show you around tomorrow if you like. I have it off.”

“Sure.”

He pulls into the parking lot of some upscale looking restaurant that seems out of place here in Alaska.

“I’ll get your door. The parking lot might be icy,” he says as he hops out.

I look around as he comes around the hood to get my door. The parking lot is half full already, and I take a deep breath as he opens my door. My mouth starts to water at the scent coming from the restaurant.

“Smells good,” I say with a smile, and he grins, taking my hand and leading me towards the front door.

Davis opens the door for me and I let him take the lead with talking to the maître d to check us in.

“Right this way,” she says, and Davis takes my hand, and we follow her over to our table.

I don’t miss the way that she eyes Davis, looking at him appreciatively. I move closer to him, giving her a wide smile as she finally looks over at me.

“Enjoy your meal,” she says, hurrying off.

I laugh under my breath. I can’t blame her. Davis looks amazing tonight in a crisp white button-down shirt and dark blue jeans. His dark brown hair is tousled slightly from the wind, and my fingers itch to fix the strands that are out of place. Instead, I pick up the menu.

“How long are you staying in Aspen Ridge?” He asks me as we both look over the menu.

“For a week. Maybe longer. I need to figure out my next move,” I admit.

“Well, I hope you stay longer,” he says with a charming smile.

Me too,I think, but I don’t say that out loud.

“So, you were in the Army?” I ask him, and he nods.

“Yeah, I joined right after high school and did two deployments before I decided to get out.”

“Where were you stationed?” I ask him.

“Fort Sam in Texas.”

“That must have been quite the shock,” I say with a laugh. “To go from Alaska to Texas.”

“Oh, it was.”

“Good evening, and welcome to Kindling Steakhouse,” our waiter says as he stops next to our table. “Can I start you off with something to drink?”

“Just a water for me,” Davis says, and I nod.

“Same.”

“Would you like to start with any appetizers?”
