My throat is on fire from holding back the tears, and I sob as the first drops spill onto my cheeks.

I take one last look in the rearview mirror, and when I see Gunner come running out of the woods, the final piece of my heart breaks in my chest.

EIGHT

Gunner

She left?

That’s all I can think as I watch the taillights disappear. My bear is roaring at me to go after her, drag her back here and demand to know what the hell she was thinking, but I hold him back.

She left for a reason.

She probably just wanted to see her friend. It’s been one hell of a morning,my bear tries to rationalize, and I know he could be right.

Or Ash could be right.

That niggling doubt starts to get bigger, and I swallow hard as I stand there in the snow.

Maybe humans are fickle. Maybe she changed her mind. Maybe killing all of those men made her feelings about me change.

My bear howls in pain inside of me, and I want to do the same thing. This hurts worse than being shot or blown up. It feels like I’m dying; like my heart has been ripped out of mychest, and I want to run after her and drag her back here and also curl up until this pain goes away.

It won’t go away. Not until we have her back with us,my bear tells me.

“Okay, we have the men in my truck bed. Niko called some of his doctor friends at the hospital and told them what happened. They’re going to let us use the cremation equipment in the basement.”

I nod, not really hearing his words.

Dealing with Frankie’s dad and his men was a pleasure. Ripping out their throats was a quick death, too quick for my liking, but I wanted it to be over so that I could get back to my mate. My bear and I are happy that she’s finally free of them and safe. She won’t have to live her life looking over her shoulder, not with us watching over her.

But now she’s gone…

She could be in danger. Go after her,my bear snarls at me.

“I doubt that anyone will come looking for them, but we’ll keep an eye out,” he goes on.

I nod again, and he sighs.

“What is it?”

“Frankie left with Cameron,” I tell him, and Davis frowns.

“Okay, she probably just needed some fresh air or to get out of the house and process this mess,” he says logically.

“Or she left me.”

“You’re so damn dramatic, Gunner,” he sighs, and I glare at him.

My bear growls at me, urging me to take a swipe at him, but I remind him that we’re friends. He snorts, pacing back and forth inside of me.

“What am I supposed to do now? Give her time and wait for her to come back? What if she doesn’t come back?” I ask as Ash joins us.

“Who?”

“Frankie left with Cameron.”

I can see it on Ash’s face. He wants to tell me that he was right. All of his worst suspicions about human mates just came true. He doesn’t look as pleased about being right as I thought he would, though.
