“Backdoor,” Cameron whispers to me, and I nod.

“We’re leaving,” I tell Gunner, and he growls at me.

“Davis is in town. He’ll pick us up out back,” Cameron tells me.

“Davis is picking us up,” I tell Gunner as we make our way to the back of the store.

“Stay on the phone with me,” he orders me.

I follow Cameron to the back door. She waves at someone behind the counter, and she nods, letting us leave that way. We rush down the alley and come out at the end as Davis pulls up.

“Hurry,” he tells us, throwing open the door of his truck.

We both dive into the truck, and he takes off.

“Are you okay?” Gunner asks me, and I nod, then realize he can’t see me.

“Yeah, Davis has us. I’m okay.”

“Come here.”

“Where?”

“To the Mountain Rescue headquarters.”

“Okay.”

I tell Davis what Gunner said, and he nods as he turns onto a side road, and we start up the mountain. A few minutes later, we pull up outside of a nice wood cabin.

Gunner flies out of the front door and my mouth drops open as he rushes to open the passenger door. He lifts me out of the truck, and his eyes scan over me.

“Did they touch you?”

“No,” I assure him.

“Did they say anything?”

“No, I don’t think that they even saw me. I ducked back into the shop as soon as I spotted them.”

He nods, setting me down and wrapping his arm tight around me.

“We’ll keep you safe,” he promises me, and I nod against his side.

As he holds me, I realize that I do feel safe now that I’m with him. He always seems to have that effect on me.

“I’m going to take her home,” Gunner tells Davis, and he nods.

“I’ll tell the other guys, and we’ll head into town.”

Gunner nods, and then he’s leading me over to his truck and lifting me into the passenger seat. He lifts me like I weigh nothing, and I love it. I feel so small and pretty when I’m standing next to him.

We’re silent as we drive home. I can see him scanning our surroundings as we go, and it makes me feel nervous. I find myself looking around, too, even though we’re the only ones on the road out here.

“Go inside. I’m going to look around.”

“They’re probably still in town. They were getting out of a car then. It looked like they had just gotten to town.”

He nods, and I sigh as I head up the front porch steps and unlock the front door. Gunner is already walking around the property, and I watch him go for a moment before I close the door.
