“My mate has been kidnapped.”

He sits up quickly, his big, booted feet hitting the floor with a loud stomp.

“Do you know who?”

“No, but I have a feeling you’d know what better than I would.” This guy is something…different. I don’t know why I’ve never noticed it but there is something weird about Magic. Maybe it’s just that I spent all my time hiding, unwilling to risk my own uniqueness being discovered.

“You’re not supernatural. Are you?” He paces around me and I can feel the beast inside him getting antsy. Wanting to pounce on me, wrestle me out of his town.

“I’m human. Yes. But I can feel things. Like the fact that your wolf is going crazy and wants you to throw my ass out of here. And I can feel that you’re in love with the waitress at the diner. She’s at the edges of your mind all the time. You can’t forget about her.”

He sucks in a sharp breath. “Okay. Nice parlor trick. But what are you?”

“Just an empath. I sense people’s feelings. Their emotions.”

“Ah.” He nods his dark head wisely. “And you can feel all that off me. Interesting.”

“But my problem is that I know someone took my mate…I mean the girl who’s supposed to be my mate. I can feel her fear and anger. And then nothing. It was in her shop.”

“Which shop?”

“Wiccan Nights.”

“The witch, Trinity. Okay. Let’s go check it out.”

He follows me down the road and then inside her business. Doesn’t take him long to nod. “Yeah. It’s a warlock. A warlock took her. Of course I don’t know why.”

“I do,” I say grimly. “He wants her. He feels her power and he wants her.”

“That is a nifty parlor trick. Now if you could just tell me where to find her.”

“I think that’s your job, Sheriff. I got you some information but I can’t do everything.”

“Right. Let’s start the search then.”

He eyes me uncertainly. “I could do this better by myself,” he says.

I shrug and glare at him. “Doesn’t matter. I’m not going anywhere. If it was your mate, I don’t think you would be either.”

He sighs and starts to unbutton his shirt while I watch him, wide-eyed. “What the hell are you doing?”

“You know I’m a wolf shifter. I’ll be able to track better as my wolf.” I nod my head, uneasy but unwilling to back down. I need to find Trinity. Like right now.

I stare at him, fascinated when he goes buck-naked and then his bones seem to meld into some crackling, ephemeral body that twists and turns until all of a sudden I’m finding myself facing a gigantic silver wolf with glittering amber eyes and a huge maw full of sharp, long teeth.

He snarls and I swear to god, I feel all the blood leach out of my body. Which seems to amuse the hell out of the huge wolf shifter. He yips at me and then turns towards the dark spot that I saw on the floor. His nose hits the ground and he draws in huge gulps of air, his head turning towards the door. He paces out the door and I follow along quickly.

He leads us along the sidewalk and I’m not really surprised when nobody seems to pay any attention to the big wolf. Some even smile and wave.

Apparently everyone knows but me. Although the waitress walking into the restaurant yelps and dashes inside the door, eyeing him warily. He seems to lose focus for a minute and I see him lurch towards where she’s at, staring at him with big eyes.

I tap his shoulder. “Hey, big fella. Romance later. We need to find Trinity.”

He turns and snarls at me but then, with one last glance at the blonde waitress, he darts along the trail he was following.

We head into the surrounding woods and after about an hour, when I’m ready to drop and the wolf doesn’t even look winded, we reach a spot that he circles and then plops down on the ground and the next thing I know I’m face to face with a naked man again.

“You know. You guys need to figure out how to shift with clothes. I mean, seriously. I’m not a prude but I really don’t want to keep seeing you nude!”
