Thanks for the heads up

I’ll make sure Mom doesn’t panic if she can’t get hold of Lulu

Let me know if you need anything

I was reasonably certain he could glean I was going to be away for a heat, but luckily he didn’t inquire any more than that.

Luna met me in the parking lot when I arrived, giving me an information slip to put on my dashboard so security would know I was a registered long-term guest for the month. She was still wearing my blanket around her shoulders.

“Hurry up,” she demanded. “I’m all itchy. I need to make my nest perfect.”

We knocked on Auggie’s door on our way up, and he joined us so Luna could get him properly acquainted with everything. Her freezer was crammed with meals from the heat service, but Auggie would be in charge of heating them up for us and making sure we ate. The fridge was equally stocked with fruits and yogurts, and boxes of baked goods.

“I’ve got a bunch of snacks up in the nest too,” she told us. “I have two flats of water bottles upstairs, I tackled cleaning the bathroom and the kitchen, and now I don’t know if there’s anything else I have to do. Everything was always managed by someone else at all my other heats.”

“Don’t worry, babe,” Auggie assured. “You’re pretty stocked up, and we’ve got a handful of people on standby, right?”

“Oh, right. They gave me a connected buzzer system that I picked up the other day.” She pulled out a bright red button. “Luca or I can hit this from the nest, and it will send an alarm to you,” she said to Auggie, passing him the other half of the system. “It’ll also alert the doctors in charge of the study and they’ll reach out to you to see what’s going on. If we need more than that, you’ll be in charge of getting it.”

“Got it,” Auggie replied. “I’ll keep my phone charged. And before I forget, take this for your nest.” He peeled off his shirt that looked a little damp. “I wore it for pole training so it would be extra funky for you.”

Luna wrinkled her nose.

“Don’t give me that look. I’m not taking a chance of you biting me if I have to go into your nest for any reason.”

Auggie didn’t smell bad. His scent was kind of like a fruitcake, rich and sweet. I didn’t mind having it in the nest for his own protection in case either of us got a little wonky if he had to step in.

“Do you have your cuffs and collar so you don’t end up bonded to my bestie forever?” Auggie asked me.

“I have to pick them up from the clinic. I was going to do that after work today, but Luna asked me to come early.” Failing at my first task didn’t bode well, but I tried not to take it as a sign for the rest of the heat.

Luna turned puppy eyes onto Auggie.

He sighed dramatically. “You don’t have to give me the eyes. I’ll go pick them up so he doesn’t have to leave you.”

Luna brightened instantly and gave him a quick hug before tugging me in the direction of the stairs. “Nest.”

“Enjoy that omega brain melt,” Auggie told me, a smile tugging at his lips. “She’s gonna be stuck to you.”

I scooped her up into my arms, where she nestled in, throwing her arms around my neck. “Oh nooo, however will I survive that?”

Ihad never been so comfortable in my whole fucking life. It didn’t matter that I could barely breathe and was starting to sweat, because my nest was an absolute mountain, and Luca was tucked into the center with me, in the pitch blackness from the stack of blankets over top of us. I was purring like a cat dosed on the ‘nip, and too cozy to consider moving.

A spear of light had me squinting and burrowing my head deeper.

“Sorry,” Luca whispered. “I needed to get a little more air in here.”

I wriggled around, dragging him on top of me. “You’re letting out the warm.”

“You’re gonna get heatstroke in here,” he replied, smoothing a hand over my hair.

“Then I’ll die happy.”

“Don’t be like that. We have to get some more calories in both of us, and you haven’t finished your water either.”

I didn’t want to eat or drink; I just wanted to float in the toasty plushness. Luca tried to pull me upright and was met with the most petulant whine I’d ever heard myself make. Apparently having a heat at home with someone I actually liked turned me into a giant fucking baby.

Luca wrangled me upright, wrapping one of the blankets around me, before he forced the remnants of my water bottle on me. He added a straw from my stash and I sipped it down while he ventured downstairs to grab a pair of buttery croissants he’d stuffed with some ham and cheese. I was trapped between the urge to follow him so he was still close, and the need to be near my nest.
