“Luca, you’re taking too long.”

He rushed back upstairs with our food, and sat in the nest with me while he arranged them into sandwiches. “Here. You have to eat at least half of it.”

When I opened my mouth to protest, he tucked the croissant into it instead. With a grumble, I followed his instructions. “That was mean.”

“I promised to take care of you. I’ll do that however I have to.” He leaned in to lick some of the croissant crumbs off my lips. “Besides, you want to be a good girl for me, don’t you?”

The question caught me off guard, slick flooding my panties. “Luca,” I gasped.

I shivered, burrowing deeper into the blankets. I was definitely creeping into the edges of heat fever, but heats were a bit more all or nothing. Sure, we had symptoms beforehand, but the actual start of it was an unmistakable brick to the face.

Auggie popped in every so often. It wasn’t as annoying as I’d expected, which was good because the last thing I needed was for my instincts to label him as an intruder.

“Here you go, babe.” Auggie passed me a steaming cup. “My great-aunt’s recipe. She always swore it helped make her heats more comfortable.”

I accepted the cup while Auggie got the hormone test strips ready. He tested Luca first and dutifully recorded the hormone levels for the study before doing the same to me so they could see if my levels were impacting Luca.

None of us knew what the specifics of the numbers meant, but we had only been instructed to collect the data. Other people would be in charge of interpreting it.

The tea was a weird flavor. Somehow earthy, fruity, and sour at the same time, but it wasn’t bad. “Do you drink this for yours?”

“Since my first.” Auggie nodded. “I don’t know that it actually does anything since I have nothing to compare to, but it’s become something of a ritual at this point.”

At least he wasn’t feeding me something completely untested.

“Have you had enough to eat today?” Auggie asked.

“Probably not,” I replied.

“Her appetite is kind of low,” Luca told him. “We’re working on it.”

“Do you want me to go and get some of those bakery muffins you were raving about the other day?”

I pouted. “No, because Luca is the one who makes them and he’s here so it won’t be the same.”

“I could make some for you here if you want. I can get the recipe from Jasper.”

“But if you’re making muffins, you won’t be in the nest, and if you’re not in the nest, I don’t wanna be in the nest, but I also want to stay in the nest.”

“Is your hormone soup a little stronger than usual?” Auggie asked. “I don’t remember you being this fussy when you have your heats at the club.”

“It is stronger. I don’t know what to do with myself.”

“It could literally be the fact that her other ones were at the club,” Luca said. “This is Luna’s first heat at home, so it makes sense she would feel different.”

Auggie beamed at the two of us. “Are you sure it’s not because you’re here?”

Luca’s cheeks flushed pink. “I didn’t want to presume.”

I got tired of Luca not being stuck to me, so I climbed into his lap while Auggie laughed and Luca tucked me closer.

“Okay, well, I’m gonna go get some dinner. Slap the button if you need me before I’m back.”

He kissed my cheek before departing, and when the nest had descended into silence, I settled on my back in Luca’s lap, looking up at him while he cradled me.

“This is embarrassing.”

“It’s pretty cute from my angle.”
