I laughed so hard I choked and Luna helpfully patted my back, all of her work undone when the dogs knocked me over again. She threw the ball for me and they zipped off once more.

“I vote we stand up so we don’t get trampled again.”

I stood first and helped her up, keeping my arm looped around her as we continued the game of fetch. She looked so sweet and happy in the sunlight, and I still couldn’t quite wrap my brain around the fact that she was mine. Even stranger was the fact that she wanted everyone to know.

We had begun as the most precious secret. Now she was still precious, but no longer a secret.

“I got you something.”

I glanced down at her after throwing the ball again. “Yeah?”

“I’m not going to give it to you until tonight.”

“What’s tonight?”

“Dinner at my place. And before I forget—” She rose up on her toes for another kiss. “—happy eleven months.”

It warmed me through that she not only remembered but had thought to say something.

“Am I allowed to start buying anniversary presents?”

“Absolutely you are.” She beamed at me. “And tiaras are no longer out of the question.”

I chuckled, holding her close. “I’ll hit up the jewelers immediately.”

I threw the ball for the dogs until my arms were ready to fall off, at which point Luna took over. She had a wicked arm on her, and the dogs were in their absolute glory.

“Do you think I should get a pet?”

“Only if you want one. What would you get?”

“Maybe a cat? I feel like I could get used to them jumping on me in the night if they lived there. Dogs are kind of growing on me too.”

“Sidney will be taking a new set of fosters pretty soon. I’m sure you could get one of them if you wanted.”

“I can definitely take a look when that happens.”

“Are you cooking tonight or are we ordering in? What should I bring?”

“Just yourself. This is all on me tonight.”

Luna wasn’t much of a chef, and it made me even more curious about what she had planned. We had never had an anniversary-specific dinner before.

“I should go get started on everything. I’ll see you in a few hours?”

“I could come over and help,” I offered.

“That would ruin the surprise.”

“Fine, I’ll be good.”

I went about the rest of my day consumed with wondering what tonight would be like. With my tasks completed, I went home to shower and dress before setting off to pick up some fresh flowers for Luna.

I parked outside her building and before I reached the door, I heard the tiniest scream. I followed the sound over to the dumpsters and found the most pitiful ball of orange.

“Hey there, little one.”

The kitten screamed back and tromped toward me on unsteady legs.
