There was so much more in those words than just a question and I hummed. “That is the plan, though we haven’t had a chance to pick a date yet. William’s job at the mechanic keeps him pretty busy, and my clinic has been doing well lately.”

Dad grunted, approval warming his tone. “There are worse things in life than work being busy; it puts food on the table and keeps you in business. Let us know when you’ve got a day picked, we’ll make it work. Have a good day, you two. Oh, and you too, son.”

Devin and I both responded, then when the line died, I hung up and turned fully to face Will. He’d paled a good bit since the last time I looked, but he was smiling.

“That went…better than I thought it would, honestly.”

I nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly. Dad was without a doubt our biggest hurdle and while he wasn’t thrilled with the new development, he also wasn’t storming the house to challenge Will to a duel over my honor.

We had to be happy with the small things.

Devin snorted, leaning back on the couch with a grunt. “I thought he’d be a lot harder to work with on this. Maybe the rumors about you beating the blood out of that idiot at the bar helped some.”

Knowing Dad and how he worked? Yeah, that probably did smooth things over a bit. At least that creep had a purpose, though I still would have preferred to avoid the entire encounter.

William dipped his head. “Maybe, but either way, I’m going to have to watch myself. Your Dad makes you look like a kitten, and I’m not sure how he’ll react to me even hugging Bea, nonetheless kissing her.”

At that, I stepped in with a stern frown.

“I don’t care what he has to say about that. Whenever they visit in the future they’ll be guests, and they don’t get to dictate how I act with my boyfriend. If you want to hug or kiss me then go for it. As long as all hands stay in plain sight and we keep things decent, they have no right to complain.” Then I added with a quiet grumble. “Not with how my parents hang off each other all the time.”

Devin barked a laugh at that. “You’re right there. They have no shame about it either. You remember that time when we had that school play, and they were making out in the front row?”

I groaned, slapping my hands over my cheeks at the memory. “We were teased about that for months, and when we mentioned it to them, they only grinned as if they’d won an award.”

Devin nodded, “I’m happy that they’re still painfully in love even decades later, but I wish they hadn’t decided to show it right that moment.”

Leaning back against Will, I couldn’t help but think about our future. Would we be like that?

To a certain degree, I knew Will wasn’t the sort for such blatant displays of affection, and neither was I.

I couldn’t see us making out like teenagers at a school play, but I could imagine me melded to his side while we watched with pride.

“Just you wait Devin, now you’ll get to see it from two couples.” I teased and he groaned.

“Don’t make me regret helping you two get together.”

He stood, giving me a one armed hug, then doing a hand slap handshake with William. “I’m getting out of here before you two start randomly making out. I don’t want or need those images in my brain, thank you.”

He didn’t give me a chance to shoot something back before he was out the door, leaving

Will and I alone again.

A few seconds passed, then he asked hesitantly. “Do you really want to be like that? All over each other?”

Just like I’d figured, he didn’t sound comfortable with the thought and I shook my head, patting his chest soothingly.

“No, neither of us are that shameless, but watching Devin squirm is fun.”

He snorted, but didn’t argue that. “I’m starting to remember how impish you can be.” He said, flopping back onto the couch with a sigh. “You’re going to wield that mercilessly against me, aren’t you?”

I shrugged, curling up into his throat as I did.

“Probably. Do you regret agreeing to date me?” I asked, only half kidding.

He dragged an eye open and shot me a look. “No, and I never will. There are worse things in the world than being kept on my toes by a beautiful woman. I’ll just have to learn to roll with the punches.”

Warmth slid through my veins like heated molasses, and I hummed. “Good answer.”
