“Ah,” Miti said, looking at me with what seemed like genuine affection. “You are stronger than you think. Did you feel a warmth?”

“I did.”

“That’s the beginning,” Charli said.

I didn’t know what to say. Part of me still hoped this new life I was leading was all a dream, but another part was warming up to the idea that I was a witch.

“When you are ready, Charli will take you to the grove,” Miti said.

“The grove?” I asked. “I’ve already asked her and she said no.”

“And I still will. It’s too early, Miti!” Charli said, her form expanding to a menacing size.

“You went for the first time when you were three,” Miti pointed out.

“I had lots of help, though, and I knew who I was.”

“Lira has your help.”

Charli glared at Miti but turned back to me and said, “I’ll think about it. I make no promises.”

“If you want, get in touch with Trixie. She can help train you too,” Miti said, now standing.

I nodded. “You’re leaving so soon?”

“Yes. I must get home, and Bruno will be here later in the morning.” She winked.

My heart clenched. “I can’t see Bruno.”

“You said that earlier. Why is that?” Miti looked like she genuinely wanted to know why, and the warmth in her eyes and the softness in her voice calmed me down a bit.

“I’m not human, and that scares me. I have family I never knew I had or even existed. I feel like I just opened Pandora’s box, but that box is my own life, and I’ve lost control of it. Add in that Bruno and Jacob were holding a bet about who would win me and Millie, and I just become even more upset. That doesn’t sit well with me.”

Miti walked toward me and held both of my hands. “Yes, it’s a lot you’re going through, and there is a lot of pressure to master your visions. But they are important, as is Bruno, particularly because he is in them.”

“How do y?—?”

“I know many things, and remember, Charli and I are friends. We talk.”

I blushed, realizing Miti probably knew more about me than I thought.

“Give this new part of your life a chance,” she continued. “You have what it takes, Lira. I can tell. It is a gift you have, not a curse, though it can feel like one at times.” She laughed. “Remember, at the end of the day, it’s your life, and you and only you will make the choice to learn more and master your newfound skills or ignore them and go back to your old life.”

She squeezed my hands and then let go of them, standing back. Her eyes traced my face before she said carefully, “As for Bruno participating in a bet when going on those dates with you, you know that he didn’t know you were Lira the entire time you were dating. He thought you were Millie, didn’t he?”

My face flushed at being called out. “Yes,” I whispered.

“Lira, we all make mistakes. But it’s what you do with the lessons from those mistakes that determines if you’re a better person or not.”

I let what she said sink in. “Can I get in touch with you if I need to?”

Miti smiled. “Always, sweetheart. Always.” And with that, she turned and walked out of the sitting room. I didn’t hear the front door open and close, so I imagined she teleported or something of the like back home. That sounded super convenient, and I wondered if I could learn how to do that.

Bruno

Today was New Year’s Eve, and I needed to court Lira. The fear I saw in her eyes would not leave me. It broke my heart to know she was scared of me, and it was time to prove her wrong.

I woke up before the sun rose. Wrapping my scarf around my neck, I went out to collect the items I needed.
