I smirk and shake my head. “Of course not.”

There isn’t a speck of paint on any of them. There never is. We’re damn good at what we do. Damn good at sneaking, hiding, laying in wait for our enemies. Damn good at taking from them before they even know we’re close.

I note the red splatter on Swift’s knuckles. It doesn’t look like thick paint. He catches me looking and arches a brow at me like, you gonna do something about it?

And the answer is, of course not. I have no fucking doubt that he hunted down the asshole who threatened our omega with violence, who propositioned and insulted her and taught him a lesson in manners. Hopefully, he didn’t actually kill him, though. The last thing we need is to deal with a pack intent on avenging one of their members.

He smirks and gives a quick shake of his head, letting me know he didn’t, in fact, kill him.

I blow out a breath as he singsongs. “She’s my ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-cherrybomb!” Sadie lifts her head from where Maddox is still cuddling her and gives him a bright smile as he stalks closer to her, inhaling deeply. “Mmm, smells like I should have offered to guard the flag with you, hmm? What did you and Logan get up to that has you smelling freshly fucked?”

Sadie’s cheeks turn a brilliant shade of pink, but she still smiles like a cat that caught the canary. “I’m pretty sure you can figure it out, Swift. And if you can’t, there is no hope for you.”

He growls and lunges at her, yanking her out of Maddox’s arms and hoisting her up. Her thighs part and wrap around his hips as he eats at her mouth. Her arms wind around his shoulders, and little moans fall from her lips onto his.

Perfect. Fucking perfect.

Maddox shifts. “Our omega’s already been fucked in public once today. Let’s not do that again, hmm?”

Swift growls at him, not pulling his mouth from Sadie’s while our girl just squeezes him tighter. Luca moves closer to them, slides his hand down her spine, making her shiver. “Come on, vixen. Let’s go rub our victory in those assholes’ faces.”

She giggles as she pulls her lips from Swift’s. It’s such a light-hearted sound that it makes my heart soar. I want her to always sound like that, to always be happy and laughing and full of our cum. That is what I want for our future with our omega. Please, let us have this. Let us have her.

She wiggles in Swift’s hold and our resident psycho lets her down slowly, keeping her close to his body. When she’s back on the ground, she smiles up at us. “Next time, I want to actually be where the action is.”

Ethan chuckles. “I think you got plenty of action where you were.”

That sweet delicate pink colors her cheeks again as she flicks her silver gaze in my direction. “I did.” She sounds pretty pleased about it too. “But I mean, I want to actually shoot some guys. You know,” she lifts her hands like she’s holding a gun and runs forward a few steps, sweeping left and right like I’m sure she’s seen swat teams do in movies. But then she draws up short, head tilting as she looks at something in the trees farther away. “Is that… Is there someone there?” The five of us go tense, snapping to attention and following her line of sight. “Were they watching us?”

No. No. No. This can’t fucking happen.

Because there in the trees is a man, wearing a mask and lifting a gun. A real fucking gun. Not one filled with paintballs.

“Sadie, get down,” Maddox roars, reaching into the back of his pants to pull out his own weapon.

Luca lunges at our girl, barreling into her as his body jerks. He tackles her to the ground and rolls, landing on top of her, protected from the bullets by a low wooden wall. I move on auto pilot, gripping the butt of my gun, lifting it to take aim.

I’m not as good of a shot as the others, but I’m good enough. Better than Swift, who prefers to get up close and personal with his victims using knives. He’s rushing toward the gunman now, a cry on his lips, blades flashing in his hands.

“Shit,” I swear, looking down at Luca and Sadie. “You got her?” I ask, knowing he does, knowing he’ll do anything to keep her safe and still needing the reassurance before I leave her.

“Yeah,” Luca says, covering the top of Saide’s head with his arm, sheltering her under his big body. “I got her. Go get them.”

I take one last look at my omega, and the chase after the others.

Chapter 23: In which I give in to instinct

I take too long to realize what the fuck is happening. Someone is shooting at us. And not with paintballs, with fucking bullets. Real bullets. Slamming into the wooden structures around us, kicking up dirt and debris when they hit the ground.

Luca groans on top of me, red, viscous blood dripping from his shoulder and onto my face. “Luca,” I whimper, fingers curling into his shirt. “What’s happening?”

He doesn’t pull back to look at me, just keeps his body over mine, arms wrapped around my head, covering as much of me as he can. “Shh, it’s gonna be okay,” he murmurs, though it comes out hard and panicked and not really all that soothing. It’s nice that he tries, though. “We’ve just got to stay put, vixen. We’ll be okay.”

My eyes squeeze shut as I cuddle closer to him, breathing in his scent that, even though it’s tinged with rage, helps to keep me calmer.

“Are you okay?” I whisper, wanting to check his shoulder, but also too terrified to move.

His lips brush the top of my head. “Yeah, omega, I’m fine. Just a graze. I promise everything’s fine.”
