Seb_Bedford_69: Hey Lilly, love seeing your face on the ’Gram.

I roll my eyes at how lame he sounds.

Seb_Bedford_69: Would be great to talk to you. I have something to tell you. Call me if you get this.

Well, this is an interesting twist. Given that I blocked his number after the sad trip down the mountain in Oliver’s car, I have had no contact with him since then, and now he wants to talk? Does he want to get back together? Does he regret leaving me? The questions race through my mind as I drain the rest of my wine and consider my options. On the one hand, I don’t want to talk to him, even if he were to beg to get me back. And on the other hand, I am so curious that if I don’t call now, I may just burst. I think about the best approach here, tempted to message the girls to get their guidance, and decide instead to just call him and find out what the hell he wants.

Filled with liquid courage, I call the number of the last guy who broke my heart and wait.

“Lilly? Is that you?” Sebastian answers on the third ring.

“Hi, Seb,” I say, playing it cool.

“Lilly! It is so good to hear from you!” he says with enthusiasm. This is new. “Your Instagram posts and videos have been amazing!”

I feel a wave of pride wash over me at this compliment and respond with sincerity, “Thanks, Seb. So what’s up?” I cut to the chase, not wanting to get stuck taking part in any small talk with him.

“Well,” he starts. “I have been meaning to call you and have even sent you a few text messages, which you didn’t reply to,” he adds, almost accusingly.

“I had nothing to say to you,” I respond. “And after the way we ended, I had nothing I wanted to hear from you either.”

“Fair enough,” he replies. “I just wanted to apologise for the way things ended. I know it was unexpected.”

“You can say that again,” I interject.

“Well, yes. You see, I wasn’t forthcoming with you when we broke up that day, but the truth is that I had met someone else and I didn’t want to cheat on you, so I thought it best to end it immediately.”

“Do you want a medal for this?” I ask, my voice dripping with sarcasm. And then, thinking about what he said, I say, “Wait, you met someone else? Who?”

“She is someone I work with. She was just a friend, and then one day I looked at her and felt like I wanted to be more than friends. It wasn’t any reflection on you, Lil. It’s just that Sarah and I have more in common, and with her, it is effortless. She is easy. She is amazing. I can’t wait for you to meet her.”

I feel the wind taken out of my sails as my insecurities come rushing back with a vengeance, and I cannot find the words to reply. Meet her? Hell will freeze over before that happens.

“Lilly? Are you there? I haven’t upset you, have I? Our breakup was so long ago,” he says in a voice filled with false sympathy.

“Upset me?” I ask, rallying and wrapping my pride around me like a cloak. “Of course not. As you say, it was forever ago. We weren’t that serious, and I moved on almost straightaway. Found the love of my life as well,” I lie.

“That’s great!” he says. “So it all worked out for both of us.”

“I guess…”

“That brings me to my reason for getting in contact with you. You know I always thought of you as a good friend? Even before we got together.” He did? I ask myself. “So I wanted to reach out and invite you to my wedding.”

WEDDING? What is this man talking about?

“Your wedding?” I screech. Great way to play it cool, Lilly.

“Yes, Sarah and I are getting married in a couple of weeks, on Valentine’s Day, and I would love for you to be there.”

“Wait, you and Sarah are engaged? But you can’t be. You’ve only been together for like three minutes.”

“When you meet the right person, you just know, you know?” he says with condescension.

“Oh yes,” I say, backtracking. “Totally. That is how I feel about my boyfriend. We are so in love. I just know he’s the one.” Stop talking, Lilly.

“That’s great to hear, Lil. You can bring your boyfriend with you. To the wedding. It is a full weekend event, and we would love for you to be there.”

Why? I think to myself. And also, there is no way I am going to this wedding.
