“Ah, I don’t think so…”

“You and your boyfriend are busy?” Sebastian asks with a suspicious emphasis on the word boyfriend. Does he not believe me? Does he think I would lie about this? I mean, I am, but he doesn’t need to know that. Gosh, Sebastian is such a jerk.

I take a big sip of my wine to stall for time before finally answering, “I guess I can see if he is free?”

“Excellent. I will put you and your plus one as a yes.”

“Ah, wait…,” I say, trying to pull back.

“I will email you the details,” Sebastian soldiers on. “Lilly, I can’t wait to see you then. And meet this soul mate of yours. This will be a nice way for the two of you to celebrate Valentine’s Day. At a wedding!”

“Ah, OK,” I reply, dumbstruck and bewildered by this turn of events.

“I’ll see you then, Lil. And I’m so happy you will be part of my special day.” Sebastian hangs up the phone, and I sit and stare at my home screen. What have I done?

CHAPTER 19

Lilly

“Amy?” I yell the next morning as I let myself in the unlocked front door of the Harlow house. “Are you here? It’s an emergency!” Since waking up to an email from Sebastian containing an invitation to his wedding, a wedding I agreed to attend with my imaginary boyfriend, I have been in a state of panic. After trying to calm my nerves with two cups of coffee, I hopped into Frankie, grateful again that I didn’t pack my car keys in my now stolen handbag, and hightail it to Amy’s place, hoping she will help me find a way out of this situation.

“AMY?” I yell again as I walk down the front hallway.

“What?” comes a grumbled voice from the top of the stairs. “Lilly? How can you already be having a crisis this early on a Sunday morning?” she yawns as she walks down the stairs.

“Amy! This is serious. I need your help.” I grab her arm to alert her to the urgency of my situation.

“OK, Lil. Let’s get some coffee before we go any further,” she says, giving me a proper look for the first time. “Though from what I can see, you don’t need any more coffee.”

I bounce on the balls of my feet, nervous energy spilling from me, and follow her to the kitchen.

As we enter the kitchen together, I blurt out, “I spoke to Seb last night!”

Amy’s head shoots up, and she stares at me. “You did what?”

My attention is drawn from Amy when I spy Oliver sitting at the counter, eating a bowl of cereal. Frowning at me.

“Morning, Ol,” I mutter as I walk towards where Amy is making the coffee, grabbing two cups.

“Are you sure you want another cup, Lil?” Amy asks.

“I’d take a coffee IV right about now, Amy. I am in a world of pain.”

“OK, back up,” she says as the coffee is brewing. “Walk me through what happened. Did Seb call to get back together with you?”

I note Oliver is watching this interaction, and I turn my back to him.

“No, that is not the issue here. And even if he wanted to get me back, that ship has sailed and shipwrecked on a coral reef in a land far away.”

“So what’s the issue, then?” Amy probes, pouring the coffee into both our cups. I take a grateful sip from mine, eyeing Oliver, wishing he weren’t around to hear this conversation.

“It started off fine, until he told me he had broken up with me all those months ago to get together with Sarah, a friend from his work…,” I start.

“He said what?” Amy interrupts while Oliver looks on, his jaw clenched in a way that suggests he’s angry.

“Yes. And there’s more. He and Sarah are getting married!”

“What?” Amy’s obvious shock is making me feel a little better.
