“I want to take a test.” I’d slipped away earlier in the day to buy some. “With you.”

His brow furrowed. “Whatever the result, we’re in this together. But I have to be honest with you—”

My heart sank. This is where he would tell me he couldn’t handle another pregnancy. That the loss was too great. He couldn’t go through it again.

“This time, I want to be by your side for everything,” he said firmly.

A smile spread over my face, despite my nerves. “I might want to pee on the stick in privacy, but yes, to the rest of it.”

He held up a finger. “Before you take that test, I have something I want to give you.”

I frowned as I followed him through the house and into his bedroom. He motioned for me to sit on the edge of the bed. What could he have to give me before we took a pregnancy test? Everything hinged on the results.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“The results of the test don’t change anything. I want to spend my life with you. I want children whenever you’re ready. If you’re not ready now—”

“I want babies with you when we’re meant to have them.” I realized that I wasn’t ready to be a mom at eighteen, but it was a different situation now. I was in love with Talon, and we both wanted kids.

What did it matter if it was earlier than we planned? Any way it happened would be a blessing.

He dropped to one knee in front of me, and I sucked in a breath. “What are you—”

“I want to be by your side for the rest of my life. I want to make all my decisions with you. I want to experience everything with you.”

“I want that, too,” I whispered.

“Will you marry me?”

Love for him surged through my body, and I threw myself into his arms. “Yes, yes, yes.”

Then we were kissing, my hands diving into the hair at the base of his neck. The test was forgotten as he eased back and slipped a sparkling diamond onto my finger. “It’s beautiful.”

“You’re beautiful. No matter what that test says, we’ll go through this life together.”

“Yes,” I said through a blur of tears.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

I shook my head. “I’m not either.”

He grinned. “You want to find out if we’re going to be parents?”

I nodded, feeling lighter than I had all day. Talon would always be there for me.

He was strong and steady and exactly who I wanted and needed in my life.

Talon lifted me to my feet, and we walked hand in hand toward the bathroom. I pulled the test of out of my purse.

“I’m going to do this part on my own.”

Talon chuckled. “Fair enough. But I want to wait for the results with you.”

“I want that, too.”

I carefully read the directions, even though I’d done this before. Then I peed on the stick and put it on the counter to wait. I washed my hands, then opened the door, where Talon stood with his hands in his suit pockets.
