“We okay, Liam?” I ask.
“Yeah, we’re okay.”
“Let’s make plans to get together soon.”
“Those are the best words I’ve heard in a long time.”
“When Ember and I get married, will you be my best man?”
Ember starts crying as Liam says, “Okay, I was wrong. Those are the best words I’ve ever heard. Go be with Ember. We’ll talk later, man.”
I end the call, drop to one knee in front of Ember, and take her hand. “I know this is fast, Embee,” I begin, even though it’s not. I’ve loved her forever. “But will you marry me?” She goes quiet, and I stare at her, search her face. “Ember?”
“Josh,” she begins. “All this…the game, the loss, the…are you sure this is what you want? Are you just reacting…all the emotions of the day?”
I pull the napkin from my pocket, making a mental note to thank Kalen for making me put words to paper. She takes the napkin and her eyes fill with tears as she reads: Marry me. “I wrote it before you messaged me. It’s how I wanted things to end, or rather begin.”
“Yes,” she answers softly. “I’ll marry you.” I put my arms around her and kiss her with all the love inside me. I break the kiss and she frowns. “Wait. I don’t understand. You said I had it all wrong. What exactly did you mean?”
“You’re not the consolation prize, Ember. You are the grand prize, the home run, and having you as my wife makes me the ultimate winner.”
She grins and pushes me until I fall back on my heels. She stands and unties her robe. “Oh, so you’re saying you don’t want the consolation prize I have for you under here?” She widens her robe, teasing me with her lush cleavage.
I glance up at her, the happiest man in the world. “Well, when you put it that way.”
Her smile widens as she opens her robe. “Why don’t you get over here and let’s talk about that home run.”
“Yeah, home run,” I say, my brain shutting down as it loses blood. “But first I need to touch each base, slowly, and carefully with my hands and my tongue.” Her moan of pleasure puts the pieces of my heart back together, and while we lost the championship today, with Ember and Liam back in my life, I truly am the winner.
