Page 56 of Finding Ava

She grabbed one of his hands and held onto it…tight. She made the sign for love in return and his heart eased a bit. She would heal, but it was almost more than he could handle that she’d been hurt at all.

They’d not had all the information they’d needed to protect her and it was all because of Kyle and Jennings. Traitors.

He pushed thoughts of them back into the recesses of his mind. He wouldn’t think about them here with Ava. He pushed her hair back off her forehead. Seeing the white bandage enraged him but he pushed that down too.

“Go back to sleep, love,” he told her.

She nodded and between one breath and next she was back out.

He set a timer for thirty minutes, and then Cap laid down beside the woman who’d stolen his heart and just held her.

They made it safely to Tex’s.

Cap put Ava in the same room, made sure she was sleeping again, her dog on the bed with her, and then made his way to Tex’s war room. The guys were all there.

Cap took a deep breath. “I appreciate all you’ve done for us. Tex, I need Ava to stay here. Me and Holland are going hunting.”

Tex nodded. “She’s welcome. Jo will be coming here once she discharges from the hospital. Yeah, she’s welcome as long as she needs to stay.”

Cap walked over and shook the man’s hand. “Thank you.”

“Thanks aren’t necessary. You’d do it for me in a heartbeat.”

“I would,” Cap affirmed. “I need all the information you can get me on Kyle and Jennings’ whereabouts. Wolf,”—he turned to the other man—“I need you to stay here until I can take out our traitors. Ava will try to talk you into taking her to Minneapolis—ignore it. She stays here until I get back.”

Wolf nodded as did his men. SEALs bred a particular type of man—the great ones. Every man in the room with Cap at that moment was just that…the best of the best. He could trust them to care for Ava while he went hunting.

The Russians had knowledge of Cap’s layout for the operation in Idaho. He had to take out the ones who’d given them that knowledge. Only then would he listen to Ava about her knowing the whereabouts of the flash drive. Only that would stop the Chinese and the Russians.

With Jennings providing underground support for the enemy he was a loose end that needed to be tied up. And Cap had a reckoning with Kyle coming up. She’d betrayed them all when she gave up the information to the Russians.

She had to pay for that.

He and Holland were heading out in about an hour for D.C. Jennings kept an apartment there and Tex had traced Kyle to his residence. Jennings was there as well.

Two birds. Cap would see if he could make it one stone.

He had showered earlier while Ava slept and he wanted to spend his last few minutes with her. He needed to explain what he was doing.

When he left with Holland, Tex would be the one to wake her up every thirty minutes. Cap and Scope had been worried about a concussion so they were waking her up to make sure she did, in fact, wake up.

He pushed off his boots and crawled in the bed with her, pulling her back to his chest. He held his hands out in front of them and waited for her to wake up.

“I hurt,” she signed.

“I’m sorry, baby, so damn sorry,” he whispered at her neck even as he signed the words to her.

“You’re dressed?” she asked.

“I’m going hunting,” he told her plainly. “You’re going to stay here with Tex. I shouldn’t be gone long—a day or two at most. You’re going to stay here and heal for me.”

Cap could tell she wasn’t feeling her normal self because she didn’t argue with him, just made the I love you sign and sank back into sleep.

He loved her so much—more than any man had loved any woman.

Every move he made for the rest of his life would be for her and her safety.

He held her and breathed her in for the next few minutes, then reluctantly got out of the bed. He put his boots on, checked his K-bar was in place and then glanced at her once more.
