“I’m coming back,” he told her aloud.

It was both promise and vow. He gave Caesar a quick pat on the head and said, “Guard” and then he stepped out of the room.

Holland was waiting on him outside. “We need to move,” he told Cap.

Cap nodded and followed his man down the stairs and back to the war room.

“We’re bugging out,” he told the men gathered there.

“Hooyah!” the men said together.

Cap nodded and he and Holland headed to the SUV that would carry them to the jet. Tex had gotten them a ride on a different plane so that Jennings couldn’t trace Cap’s. He didn’t want the bastard to have any idea he was coming so soon. He wanted him complacent.

Neither he nor Holland carried any guns or ammunition. This was going to be a simple infiltration with close quarter kills. It’s what they did best. Jennings would know this but the bastard had holed up in his apartment anyway. Hell, Jennings was himself a SEAL. To think he’d betrayed his country the way he had was disgusting.

He and Holland made the plane and then they were heading to D.C. Plans were made to be executed at the time of arrival and he and Holland were all on the same page.

“Any news down there?” he asked Holland.

Holland ran a hand down his face. “I’m close—so close I can smell her.”

Cap nodded. “Good. When this is all over I’ll come down with Ava.”

“I could use the extra set of eyes. By the way, Mann is devastated.”

“Because of Kyle?”

Holland yawned. “Yeah, he fancied himself in love with her—just goes to show the heart doesn’t know everything.”

Cap looked at Holland closely. “What are you saying?”

“I don’t know, man. I’m just tired. I spend all my time monitoring CCTVs looking for her. How is Ava?”

“She’ll recover. I’ll be there to make sure.”

Holland gave him a chin lift and then proceeded to get some rest. Cap was too wired. Soon he’d have the bastard responsible for Ava’s pain under his knife.

It took them a little over an hour to get to the outskirts of D.C. They took a cab into the city and were dropped off about two blocks away from Jennings’ brownstone. It was in a very rich part of the city—being a traitor must pay well.

It was cold so no one thought anything of two men wearing heavy coats and skull caps.

“Ready?” Holland asked.

Cap nodded and then the game was on.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ava woke slowly this time. Coming out of sleep was difficult because it brought her into pain. Her face hurt. So did her abdomen. So did her wrists. Hell, the list went on and on it seemed. A cold nose pressed against her neck.

Caesar.

She turned over and knew she groaned in pain but it couldn’t be helped. She wondered where Cap was. Oh wait, he’d told her he was going hunting. And what the fuck did that mean?

She reached for Caesar and hugged him hard. He looked really good, and she knew Keegan and Melody had taken good care of him the last week. She pushed her hair back off her face and looked around noticing her earbuds on the table beside the bed.

She reached for them and put them in. Her ears were a little sore as she’d been wearing them more often than not, but she needed to be able to hear. Keegan and Melody didn’t sign. She dressed quickly, the feeling that something big was going down a sharp knowledge in her gut. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail and headed out of her room.

She really wanted Captain. She really needed him to chase away this awful feeling of doom. Ava headed down the stairs and could hear noise coming from the war room. She made her way there and found Scope, Marshall, Ray, Wolf, Abe, Dude and Benny along with Keegan. Where was Kyle?
