“Are you okay?” Elliot asks, taking my face in his hands. He looks livid, but also sad.

“Yeah,” I swallow. “Is your hand okay?” I reach up to pull his hand away from my face and inspect it between my own. His knuckles are red.

“I’m fine, I barely felt it,” He answers.

“Liar.” I smirk a little. He grabs my hand and kisses it.

“I promise, I’m fine. I want to pummel his face into a pumpkin, but he’s not worth it,” He seethes.

“Did something happen between you guys?” I ask. But before he can answer, my parents reach us.

“What just happened?” My mom asks. My dad stands next to her, arms crossed waiting for an answer. “Was that Will Michaelson?”

“Yeah. He…he said some rude things to me…about me…” I feel my face flush again.

“I punched him,” Elliot speaks up, his voice strained, but straight and serious. “I apologize for being violent…but he…he made a crude and inappropriate comment about Mads and…I punched him.”

My parents look back and forth between the two of us before my dad says, “Hopefully you gave him a black eye.” He sticks his hand out to pat Elliot’s arm.

“Dad!” I whine and he chuckles. Elliot sighs in relief that my parents aren’t mad at him.

“I’m serious!” My dad responds. My mom nods her head in agreement.

“We don’t condone violence…but I’ll punch him myself if I see him again,” My mom declares.

“Okay, no more punching. This is supposed to be a ‘family fun day’,” I exclaim.

“This has been the best family fun pumpkin picking day I’ve ever had,” Dad confirms and Elliot chuckles.

“Agreed,” Mom says.

“Thanks for protecting our girl, Elliot.” My dad reaches out to pat his arm again.

“Always,” Elliot responds. I put my face in my hands and groan.

“Okay…let’s move on. Elliot let’s go on a hayride. We’ll be back.” I pull Elliot along with me and away from my parents.

“Your parents are pretty incredible,” He mentions as we near the entrance for the hayride.

“Yeah…I know. They really are,” I admit. He reaches out to help me up on the wagon. He pulls himself up behind me and we sit towards the back on the bench. He pulls me close and kisses my head.

“You never got to answer, did something ever happen between you guys? I sensed a lot of…animosity,” I ask.

Elliot takes a deep breath. “Yeah…” I look at him and wait patiently. “I’m worried you’ll be upset.”

“You’re making me nervous,” I say with a frown.

“It…I…” He sputters. I hold his other hand in mine, gently squeezing his hand in encouragement.

“It’s me, just talk to me,” I say quietly.

He sighs heavily. “Remember spring of senior year?” He asks, tracing a heart on my wrist.

“Uhm yeah…I don’t think I’ve ever been that angry in my whole life…” I recall.

“You were with Will, everyone knew that. But he’s always been a dick. I never liked him,” He starts. “That spring, a few weeks before prom…I overheard him in the locker room after gym. He was complaining to his friends…” He takes his hand out of mine and rubs his face.

I wait for him to compose himself. He lets out a harsh breath and says, “He was complaining about being with you for almost all of senior year and you…you never…let him…do anything with you…you were prude…a tease…” My face burns and I look down at my lap.
