I don’t know how it happened but David and I have now been texting all day.

Well, I guess technically I know how it started.

I texted him to tell him thank you for the food and for checking in on me. He wrote back with some more incredibly kind and uplifting words. But then it just kept going.

It’s been all day now, and we’ve been going at it since I started my work day. He just told me a story about a kid in his class that accidentally said ‘tengo mierdo’ instead of ‘tengo miedo’. Mierdo means shit and the very similarly but differently spelled word miedo means fear. So instead of saying ‘I have fear’, he said ‘I have shit’.

Ana: Why are your kids trying to speak Spanish?!

David: Kids are strange. I have no idea. But I felt so bad, he was so embarrassed…

Ana: Haha, I would be too

David: I think they’ll use anything to get out of learning about World War II.

Ana: I mean…same

David: What?! It’s so interesting!

Ana: No

I’m laughing down at my phone when Evan comes over, his eyebrows drawn up and his mouth quirked to the side.

“You seem happy today,” he notes.

I roll my eyes. “Just talking to one of Maddie and Elliot’s friends.”

“One of their friends?” he questions.

I glower at him. “I guess I can say he’s one of my friends too, but I still don’t know him too well,” I say, responding to David and then putting my phone face down on my desk. It immediately buzzes but I ignore it, holding Evans eye contact.

He keeps his easy going smile on his face when he says, “Whatever you say.” He slowly backs up and walks out of my office.

I roll my eyes and pick my phone back up.

I continue my texting conversation with David even after I get home. We’re currently debating arroz con gandules and he’s wrong.

Ana: You’re missing out

David: I promise you I’m not

Ana: Olives make it SO much better

David: I think olives deserve a special place in Hell, honestly

Ana: I wish you could have heard that scoffing sound I just made at you

David: I wish I did

Ana: Picture me rolling my eyes

David: Picture me laughing

Ana: Olives are amazing. I could eat them out of a jar

David: I don’t know if I can be your friend anymore

Ana: Oh no, what ever will I do
