Heat rose into her cheeks and she knew they were bright red. Noah was nice enough to pretend not to notice.

“It is so incredibly beautiful here,” Angie said, looking around. “It is peaceful. I love all the different types of life that live here – even the insects.”

“The shifter world is very similar to the human world. We have a great city life for those who prefer it. There are tons of mountains, forests, ponds, lakes, and everything else you can imagine for the rest of us.”

“I remember. It’s beautiful there, although I’m partial to the human world.”

“You could always give the shifter world a try,” Noah said.

Angie sighed heavily and looked at Noah. He took it as a sign to drop the subject.

I need to tell him the reason I can’t go through with the mating ceremony.

It was so hard to open her mouth and let the words come out. The problem wasn’t even the secret anymore. Flora was right about her parents never being ashamed of her and that Angie didn’t need to protect their reputation. It was the fact that it had been so ingrained in her that no one from the Silent Paw Pack should know.

The meadow was beautiful and the creek was inviting. She watched Apollo jump in. Remembering how much fun she and Noah had the last time, Angie wanted to wade in as well. Considering the reaction she had to him earlier, she decided not to risk it. Her hands and mouth might take on a mind of their own and reach out to him.

They basked in the sunlight, watching Apollo play. The dog had found a stick and happily fetched it about a hundred times.

“Your arm is going to fall off.” Angie laughed. “Mine feels like that sometimes.”

Noah laughed. “It’s good exercise.”

When it was time to go, Noah asked, “Where am I taking you to dinner? Some place different from Howlers’.

“Do you like Japanese?”

“I do. Point me in the right direction.”

On the way home, Angie chastised herself. “This is not me keeping him at arm’s length.”

Apollo barked.

She dropped her SUV and Apollo at the house and got into Noah’s car.

Olivia and Zac were seated across the aisle from them.

“Look who you brought with you,” she gushed. “Hi, Baby Jack. He’s so adorable.”

“I know. The baby is kind of cute, too,” Zac said.

“Aren’t you funny? Can’t you come up with something more original?” Angie asked.

“Nope. That’s all I’ve got,” Zac said. “The future alpha has been demanding service at least once in the middle of the night, so my brain isn’t operating at full capacity.”

“You are planning on having a dozen more, right?” Angie teased.

“Probably not that many,” Olivia said.

I wonder if I’ll ever meet the right person to have babies with, Angie thought.

Jack reached his arms out, staring at Noah.

“May I?” Noah asked.

“Of course,” Olivia replied.

Noah unbuckled the baby from the carrier and carefully picked him up.
