Noah laughed. “I guess I never thought about that.”

“Otherwise, it might be embarrassing for both Thomas and me if he came out to take care of it and there was a mess in the water.”

“I was surprised that the water was hot,” he said.

“The heater is on an automatic timer. It turns off at midnight unless someone overrides the timer. I come out here a lot. The maid, Betsy, and Thomas use it a lot, too. A couple of friends have permission to use it whenever they want.”

Like Micah? Noah quickly banished the thought as soon as it popped into his mind.

The breeze picked up and Angie shivered as the cool air hit her wet shoulders.

“Do you by any chance have towels out here?”

She pointed to a small chest off to the side cleverly disguised by flowers. He pulled a couple of towels out of the single drawer. He wrapped Angie up in one of them and then began drying off with the other. He was a little disappointed when Angie got dressed again so quickly.

He followed her back to the house. She tossed the towels in a basket in the laundry room.

Angie glanced at the clock on the wall. “You should probably get back to the hotel room. It’s getting late and I would hate for you to get into an accident because you fell asleep at the wheel.”

“What a polite way of saying ‘get out and go home.’” Noah laughed.

Angie merely smiled at him.

He hesitated. She seemed to read his mind.

“Yes, I was a virgin. The time felt right and you felt right, so I chose to be with you for my first time. However, that fact doesn’t change anything. We aren’t a couple. I still can’t be your luna. There are no strings attached. We simply had a very enjoyable evening together.”

Noah looked at her, shocked. Even though her words said one thing, he thought he detected a hint of vulnerability beneath them. She would never admit to it, though.

“I understand,” he said.

“You should go. It’s getting late.”

He hesitated for a second and said, “Thank you for a great day,” he said. “I enjoyed every minute of it.”

“My pleasure. It does feel good to get into the world and know that you’re making a difference, even if it is just for one dog, cat, or person.”

“It does. You’ve opened my eyes to a lot of things I was blind to before.”

He pulled her in tight against his body, hugging her tightly. Leaning down, he brushed a kiss across her lips and said, “Have a good night.”

“Be safe,” she said, locking the door behind him.

He got in the car and looked at the house, surprised that he was so disappointed that she didn’t invite him to stay the night. It would have felt good to lay in bed next to her, with their bodies snuggled together, with her scent of lavender and her essence floating around them.

Noah closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. He could smell her everywhere. It was so enticing.

Sighing heavily, he thought, I guess I can understand. Even though we just had sex and she gave her virginity to me, she is still trying to keep me at arm’s length. She doesn’t want to get hurt. I don’t want to hurt her, but I have to break this hold she has over me.

Someone different was at the front office of Angel’s Creek Hotel. Noah was glad that they had a couple of rooms available.

He found a movie that he liked, but he wasn’t paying attention to it. All of the questions that Angie had asked were going through his mind. Why was he there? What did he hope to accomplish? Couldn’t he break whatever hold she had on him if he went back to the shifter world? There were plenty of gorgeous women to fuck.

Growling, he finally managed to go to sleep.

The next morning, Noah noticed that he got a text message from his father.

You need to remember that you are the alpha. Tell Angie that she has to do her duty. Give her a certain amount of time to get her affairs taken care of in the human world and then move to the shifter world. Period. Quit chasing tail and trying to make nice.
