Noah rubbed his forehead and took a deep breath.

“I really want to tell that old man to go fuck himself,” Noah muttered.

Instead, he replied, I’m doing what I think is best. End of subject.

Once in a while, Noah had to remind his father that he was the alpha. If his father didn’t like it, then he shouldn’t have retired.

After breakfast, he called Elijah.

“How are things going there?” Noah asked.

“Fine. There’s been a couple of people who want to know where you are at and when you’ll be back.”

“Soon,” Noah said. He hesitated for a minute and then said, “I know why Angie refused to go through the mating ceremony with me. She’s a mundane human.”

Noah explained the situation to Elijah and asked his friend to keep it between the two of them.

“What are you going to do about it?”

“That’s the problem,” Noah said. “I’m not really sure. I enjoy being with her. She has so many incredible qualities. She would make the perfect luna.”

“Well, Brother, you know I have your back no matter what. Most of those traditions and ideals are out of date anyway. The elders need their world shaken up a little,” Elijah said.

“It wouldn’t be just the elders. It would be most of the pack. They would have to be willing to accept Angie.”

“They’d come around,” Elijah said. “These days, most people have the mindset that if it doesn’t directly impact them, they don’t care. For the most part, the fact that the luna is human would have no impact on them.”

“You sound so cynical.”

“I sound real,” Elijah countered.

“True enough. Let me know if anything important comes up. Otherwise, I’ll be back in a couple of days.”

Noah decided that he wanted to run. He needed some fresh air and exercise always helped him clear his mind.

He had been running for about an hour and was ready to turn back toward the car when he ran into two large, dark brown wolves. Noah recognized their scent immediately – Micah and Zac.

They greeted each other telepathically.

“I heard that you were back,” Zac said.

“I wanted to talk to Angie,” Noah said. “I found out why she couldn’t go through the mating ceremony with me. I was a little rude to her because she wasn’t honest with me upfront.”

“She was trying to protect her parents’ memory,” Zac said. “We’ve all heard that packs in the shifter world aren’t as forgiving as the ones in the human world.”

“That’s true, but I’m still trying to figure out if I can make it work. There is something about her that draws me to her,” Noah said.

“Fated mates?” Zac asked.

Noah just stared at him.

“I knew, deep down inside, the minute I met Olivia that she was my fated mate. She had been betrayed by her fiancé, the alpha of her pack up north, and came to Angel’s Creek. It was her scent that my soul recognized.”

His heart dropped and his stomach lurched. He stared at Zac in disbelief.

After a minute, he said, “I never really believed in that.”

“Believe it, Buddy. But you need to figure out your situation and fast. If you don’t think your pack can accept her, then go back to the shifter world before you really hurt Angie. If you are feeling the draw of the fated mates, then so is she. That doesn’t mean that she’s in love with you – yet. Let her get on with her life. She might be able to find happiness with someone else or she might not. But it’s not fair to her if you hang around, make her fall for you, and then you go back to your world.”
