“I just told Noah that he needed to go back to the shifter world before I fell even harder for him and I got hurt more than I already was. I told him that I would cherish the memories, but he had to go.”

“I’ll be over with some tequila, lemons, and a large box of tacos from Santo’s place,” Flora said.

“You’re trying to kill me, aren’t you?”

“Isn’t that what friends are for?” Flora asked.

Angie downloaded The Nun, The Conjuring, and The Nun II. She didn’t want to watch anything that had a hint of romance in it.

“Horror movies? Really?” Flora asked, unpacking the tequila and tacos.

“Yep. No mushy kissing crap in them,” Angie said.

“You have to take a shot every time you jump or scream,” Flora said.

“You do, too,” Angie countered.

By the time they were done with the third movie, both of them were toasted.

“It’s a good thing that I keep spare clothes here,” Flora said.

“Yep,” Angie said.

They both stepped outside with Apollo as he did his business. Both women saw shadows lurking in every corner. Flora turned around and Angie goosed her. Flora squealed, whirled around, and playfully pushed Angie. Apollo ran up, sat between them and barked, as though he was telling them to knock it off.

Angie laid in bed and looked at the dog snoring next to her. Ever since she got him, he always slept on the pillows and cradled a little stuffed bear. She pulled the covers up over him and smiled.

“You are the most adorable thing in the world,” she cooed at him. “Don’t tell Jade or Olivia, but I think you’re at least as adorable as their babies.”

Half an hour ago, Angie was sleepy. She was afraid that she was going to fall asleep on the couch before the movie was over. Now, though, she was wide awake.

Noah’s face popped into her mind when Angie closed her eyes. She could see his changing eye color and that wickedly sexy grin.

A couple of tears fell onto her cheeks as she desperately wished that she could feel his arms wrapped around her again. Just one more time.

Don’t be stupid. You would want one more time after that. And then another one more time. Be happy with the memories you have and move on.

Noah’s scent filled the room. Her heart heavy, Angie wondered if she would ever get over Noah. If he was her fated mate, as Olivia suggested, would it be possible for her to find someone to love and make a life with?

“Who needs a man? I’ve got dogs,” she muttered to herself.

Noah

Noah went to his hotel room and sat on the side of the bed, thinking about what Angie said. She was right and he had been an idiot. After they had sex, she told him that she willingly gave her virginity to him because it felt right and he felt right. In the same breath, she said that there were no strings attached because they could never be together.

Today, she told him to go home because she didn’t want to be hurt any more than she already was. It was one thing to hear Zac telling him to leave before Angie was hurt. It was quite another to hear it from Angie’s lips.

A million feelings thundered through him. Sadness flooded him because he had started to care about Angie. Anger with himself filled his mind because he hadn’t thought anything through. He had acted on impulse by coming back to the shifter world. Noah felt like an idiot. He shouldn’t have chased her down in the first place. Once he discovered she was human and he went home, he should have stayed.

“This is not how an alpha behaves,” he told himself angrily. “An alpha thinks things through and makes decisions based on facts, not emotions. An alpha also takes into consideration what is good for other people, which would include a mundane human who would no longer be considered part of the pack once her secret got out.”

After stuffing everything in his bag, Noah went to Howlers’.

“I’ve got to get back. Duty calls,” Noah said, hoping he sounded happier than he felt.

“I understand that,” Sean said. “I’m happy owning my bar. I wouldn’t want to be in your or Zac’s shoes. Take it easy.”
