“You do the same,” Noah said.

He noticed that Jade gave him the evil eye as he walked toward the narrow stone staircase that led to the basement.

Angie must have told her everything. I’m glad that she has friends who will be there for her.

Laughing, without humor, Noah thought, It’s funny that I actually found a woman I care about and enjoy being with. I could fall in love with her. And she’s completely off limits.

Once he got home, he threw his bag down and went out to the forest. He ran until he was so tired that he could barely move his legs. His lungs hurt and he had a stitch in his side.

The hot shower felt so good. He closed his eyes and focused on the way the water felt as it cascaded over his body. Angie’s scent haunted him. It wafted in the air around him and seemed to permeate through every cell in his body. He could see her face and imagined her standing in front of him. Noah longed to hold her.

“Stop being stupid,” he told himself.

He made himself a couple of hamburgers, drank a few bottles of beer, and just stared out at the expanse of the forest that began behind his house.

“Maybe I should go back and get Rufus for the company.” He laughed, knowing that going back to the human world was a mistake. “I’m sure there are mundane dogs here who need a good home. I should find out.”

Noah shook his head as he thought about how much Angie had changed him in the short amount of time they knew each other.

Elijah and Keith were surprised to see him already in his office the next morning. He must have had a “go fuck yourself” look on his face because they steered clear. Unfortunately, his father didn’t take the hint.

“You’re back,” his father said.

“Obviously,” Noah said, sarcastically.

“Where is Angie?”

“In the human world, where she will likely be staying.”

Noah fixed his father with a death stare. The older man got the hint that Noah didn’t want to talk about the situation and, without another word, left. His father knew better than to push the issue when Noah was in that mood.

After Noah had several cups of coffee and fired off several emails, Elijah walked into Noah’s office and shut the door.

“Someone pissed in your cereal this morning,” Elijah remarked, sitting back casually in the chair on the other side of Noah’s desk.

Noah growled.

“Talk. What happened?” Elijah ordered.

“I’m an idiot,” Noah said. He told Elijah everything that happened, including his thoughts on how foolish he had been.”

“No one but yourself will judge you on that,” Elijah said. “But you are probably the only alpha, in the history of the existence of all shifters, who has been dumped twice. I guess my feelings would be hurt, too.”

“My feelings aren’t hurt,” Noah snapped.

He stopped, shocked, after he spat the words out. Elijah merely watched him, his eyebrows raised, and his arms crossed over his chest.

Noah took a deep breath and laughed.

“She was right. I had no business hanging out with her in the human world. There is no way that I could bring her back here to the shifter world,” Noah said. “I had to leave because the longer I stayed and the more time we spent together, the more it would hurt her when I left.”

Elijah pursed out his lips and cocked his head. “It seems to me that she wasn’t the only one who was getting a little attached.”

“You’re right. I was getting attached. There is a whole lot to like about Angie. She is smart, intelligent, and caring. She is also very real and extremely stubborn.”

“I hate to break it to you, Brother, but any woman who has a hope of being in a relationship with you has to be able to hold her own. Otherwise, you would bulldoze right over the top of her.”

Noah nodded. “You aren’t wrong.” He paused for a minute and sighed. “When we had sex, it was more than just fucking. There was a connection between us.”
