Angie and Apollo left the house early the next morning and stayed busy. They spent time at the food pantry, shopped for a couple of families at the shelter, and then visited the sanctuary for some playtime and love.

She had smiles for everyone, although she didn’t feel like it. Angie fully believed in the power of smiles. They could make a person’s bad day get a little bit better. Smiles could give a person the courage to get through a rough situation.

At the end of the day, though, she was all smiled out. Helping others had given her something to think about besides Noah and how much she missed him. When she finally got home, she and Apollo went out to the rose garden.

“Mama, I miss you so much. I’m so angry that you and Daddy left me. I know you didn’t do it on purpose and it wasn’t your fault, but I’m mad. Even though I have Apollo, Betsy, Thomas, and Flora, I feel so alone. I miss our talks. More than anything I wish you were here so you could give me a hug and tell me that everything was going to be okay.”

Angie wrapped her arms around Apollo and sobbed. It wasn’t fair. Her parents had been so active and full of life. In an instant, they were gone.

“At least I got to say goodbye. The last thing I said to them before they left was that I loved them.” Angie sniffed.

“I think that you are never alone. The spirits of your parents will always be with you, even if you can’t see them,” a deep voice said.

Startled, Angie looked up sharply and squealed.

“Noah, what are you doing here?” she asked, once her heart rate evened out and the lump in her throat dissolved.

“Hi. I missed you, too,” he said.

Apollo jumped up on his paws on Noah’s shoulders and lavished his face with kisses.

“I’m glad someone is happy to see me,” Noah said.

Angie wiped the tears from her cheeks as she stood up to face him. “Jade said that you went back to the shifter world after I told you to go. There is no fairy tale ending for us, and I don’t need any more pain in my life. I’ve had just about all I can handle.”

“That’s what I came to talk about.”

“There is nothing to talk about. I need to make dinner. Betsy and Thomas will be home from the grocery store soon and they’ll be hungry,” Angie said.

“I’ll order pizza. Please, sit down and talk to me.”

Angie stared at him for a minute and then, against her better judgment, she nodded.

After Angie put in the order for pizza, she grabbed a couple bottles of raspberry iced tea. She led him to the gazebo on the side of the house where they could see the pizza delivery person arrive.

Apollo jumped on the seat next to her and laid his head on her lap. He knew that she was upset and wanted to comfort her.

Noah was quiet for a second and said, “I’ve never had this type of conversation with anyone before. It’s hard for me to find the right words.”

Angie waited. She wanted to tell him to just spit it out but she held her tongue.

“I’ve really started to care about you. You are an incredible woman and I love spending time with you. When I came back the second time, I told you that I wanted to get to know you better. It’s because there is just something about you that is like a magnet. I don’t know how to describe it. I thought that if I could figure it out, then I could go back to my world and leave you happy with yours. But I can’t. The pull is still there. I want to know where our relationship could take us.”

“Your words are sweet. If I was a shifter, I would be over the moon. Like I told you before, I’m no believer in fairy tales. There is no happy ending for us. I’m a human and you are the alpha of a pack that would never accept a mundane human member, let alone a human luna,” Angie said. “There is no point in us getting more involved. It won’t end well for either of us.”

“I know that there will be issues when your identity becomes known. Some will give you a hard time. I will try to deal with the situations as they come up.”

“What about you?” Angie asked.

“I’m the alpha. There aren’t too many people who will say a word to me. My second in command, who knows the situation, will have our back. So will my brother, Keith.”

“My world is here. I have the sanctuary, the shelter, and my friends.”

“Sean will just have to deal with the portal being used more often. You can come back two or three days a week and do what you need to do,” Noah said.

“If I was to become the luna, wouldn’t that interfere with my duties there?”

“Not necessarily. You arrange your schedule as you choose,” Noah said.
