“No, I’m good. Nice job on handling the drunk, though. Remind me to never make you angry,” Zac said.

Olivia smiled and said, “You haven’t seen nothing, yet.”

Sean walked outside with Zac as he left.

“She’s a feisty one, isn’t she?” Sean asked.

“Yes, she is. I’m glad to see that she is able to take care of herself. That’s a handy skill to have in today’s society,” Zac said. “I’m pretty sure that you just lost a customer, though.”

“I wouldn’t let him back in, even if he wanted to come back. I don’t need that kind of crap in my place,” Sean said.

“What do you know about her past and why she’s in town?” Zac asked.

“All she told me was that she had a bad break up with an ex-fiancé, and she was looking for a fresh start,” Sean said.

“That’s all she’s said to me, but I’m pretty sure that there is more to the story than that. Otherwise, there would be no reason for her insisting that she is only going to stay for a short time.”

“I agree, but she won’t tell me. I get the feeling that if I tried to push the issue, she would just clam up even more,” Sean said.

“Yep, me, too,” Zac said. “Does Jade know?”

“I think that she does, but she won’t tell. She knows about everyone’s business in town, but she doesn’t talk,” Sean said.

“Hopefully, she’ll decide that she can trust us enough to tell us what’s going on,” Zac said. “Stay safe.”

On the way home, Zac smiled. It was kind of sexy to watch her take down that huge guy, who was taller than Zac and had some muscles on him. She did it with just his pinky finger and her knee.

He was glad that she agreed to go to the carnival with him. Her scent had hovered around him since he had first met her. Sometimes, he would be focused on something else, and it would catch him off guard. Zac knew in his soul that she was his fated mate.

“That doesn’t make sense, though,” he reasoned to himself. “How can she be my fated mate? I don’t know her well. I’m certainly not in love with her.”

He thought about it for a second and said, “I am interested in her. I want to get to know her better. Maybe it’s simply because she is someone new and is a mystery. I could be imagining the whole fated mate thing. My father must be getting to me.”

Then, he laughed at himself for having this conversation with himself, out loud.

His mind wandered back to the whole fated mate idea, and he had to ask, “What would happen if two people, who were mortal enemies, were ever fated mates and how would that work out for them?”

The whole idea gave him a headache. A cold shower didn’t take his mind off of Olivia. Every time he closed his eyes, he pictured her naked by the creek, and he wanted to reach out and touch her. He could feel his cock twitching each time her image popped up.

Finally, he found the remote on his television and turned on a documentary about super volcanoes so that he could concentrate on something else besides Olivia.

Mid-morning, Ian came into his office. “Adam was found by the dragon shifters early this morning.”

“Is he alive?” Zac asked.

“Barely. He said that he had been out running with his buddies. They decided to play a game of hide and seek and separated. He was it and was in search of his friends when he came across a woman who waved her arms at him and muttered some gibberish. All of the sudden, he was paralyzed. She used her magic to make him float in front of her to a cave. Then, they started to slowly drain his blood.”

“Oh my lord,” Zac said. “The poor kid. How did he get away?”

“He said that they must have thought that he was dead or too weak to move, because they all left the cave. The paralyzing spell had worn off, so he was able to drag himself to his feet and ran out of there. He said that he just kept running until he couldn’t anymore, and he collapsed on the ground. Marvin found him and carried him back to his clan.”

“Could the boy give any idea where Marsden’s cave might be located?” Zac asked.

“Unfortunately, no. He said that he just started running and didn’t pay any attention to anything except getting as far away as he could. He did say that he thought that he ran down the mountain for the most part, so their lair is either at the top or close to it,” Ian said.
