“I don’t feel right taking a tip since we’re seeing each other,” she said.

“Why?” he asked. “You are doing a job here. You bring me drinks and food and wait on me like you do other customers. You get paid for doing your job.”

Olivia looked at him, and he knew that she still didn’t feel right about it.

“You can protest if I offer to pay you for going out with me,” he said. “Or after sex.”

She turned bright right from embarrassment, and he was afraid that she was going to pass out. After a second, she barked out a short laugh and said, “You’re terrible,” and playfully slapped him on the arm.

“I know. That’s why everyone loves me,” he said. “I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

She looked gorgeous in her pencil skirt and a blue blouse that matched the color of her eyes. Her blond hair hung loose behind her back and almost reached her butt. Her minimal make up of eyeliner and a bit of eye shadow enhanced her eyes.

The restaurant was crowded and there was a line, but Olivia and Zac were seated immediately.

“It helps when you know people,” he said, winking at Olivia.

“It also helps that you reserved the table,” the manager said, laughing, as she set the two glasses of water on the table.

“There is that, too,” Zac said. “I thought that it was just because you knew and loved me, though.”

“Even if I did, I would never admit it,” she said. “You already have a big head.”

“Ouch. That hurt my feelings.”

“Doubt it,” she said.

Olivia ordered lemonade, and Zac ordered some sweet iced tea.

“That is Helen. She’s a bear shifter and is a sweetheart,” Zac said.

“She seems to be pretty nice,” Olivia said.

“I’m wonderful,” Helen said, laughing, setting their drinks on the table. She introduced their waitress and then Helen said, “Don’t be a stranger.”

“Sean told me that you’re a hit with all of the customers. He says that they all love you.”

“I’m loveable, I guess,” Olivia said.

“That’s my line,” Zac protested.

“More than one person can be loveable,” Olivia said. “I know lots of loveable people.”

“I’m the most, though,” Zac said, puffing out his chest.

“You’re something, that’s for sure.” Olivia laughed.

“Seriously, though. Sean said that you would make a great psychiatrist or psychologist.”

“Hmm, I’ve never thought about that. Once upon a time, I thought about teaching, but as Robert Burns wrote, ‘The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry,’” Olivia said.

“Why?”

Olivia hesitated and then said, “Other people had different ideas about the direction my life should go.”

“Tell me,” he urged.

“It’s a long, boring story,” she said, taking another bite of her grilled chicken with mango salsa and said, “If all of their food is this delicious, I’m surprised you don’t come here more often.”
