Luna sighed with relief.

“Do you believe me?”

“Well,” Bruno said, “you’re not a liar.” He slipped a hand over his head. “You’ve severely fucked up my head!”

“I apologize.”

Bruno shook his head. “He apologizes,” he said to Luna.

I stood with her and blotted her tears. Staring into her eyes, I whispered, “I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you this way. Or any way. Please, forgive me.”

She pursed her lips and frowned. “Brother, you mustn’t act out like this again. You are the don now. We need your head in the game one hundred percent. Promise me you’ll be honest and upfront with me and Bruno.”

They both stared at me, waiting for my response.

“I will.”

“And you can’t go at this alone,” Bruno added. “This life is not meant for you to navigate solely. You must keep security. You must act responsibly.”

“I haven’t acted irresponsibly.”

They glared at me like I’d grown horns, and I lifted my hands in surrender.

“Okay, maybe just a little bit but it’s kept me alive.”

“Until it doesn’t,” Luna said.

I nodded. “Okay. Security. What else?”

“You tell us. You’re the don.”

I glanced at my father and rage burned through me. I eyed Bruno. “War.”

He nodded. “With whom?”

“Isn’t it obvious? The Cappallis and the Niccolòs.”

Their eyes widened. “How would they have gotten a hand up on us?”

“Where is Rolando?”

Luna gasped, and Bruno’s eyes widened more.

“No…” he whispered.

“Have you heard from Penelope?”

Luna turned and looked at Bruno.

“What?” I asked.

“She’s with the Niccolòs.”

I glared. “What the fuck do you mean, she’s with the Niccolòs?”

“We believe she was taken against her will.”

My heart slammed against my ribcage, and a foreign emotion filled me. Dread.
