I shook my head. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve worked with a lot of British actors over the years, so no need to explain.”

Rafe almost smiled. “Thanks.”

Silence fell, and he nodded and excused himself. Once alone with Katie, I whispered, “Will they survive the night without killing each other?”

“I don’t know. It’s weird, though. Because for years, Abby always gushed about how well Rafe did in this game or that one. But ever since he showed up in Starry Hills again, she’s been constantly irritated with him.”

“Hmm.”

She glanced up at me. “What is that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing.” I wrapped an arm around her waist. “Are you up for some introductions? I want to show off my girl.”

She smiled. “Just guard the back of my dress, okay? I don’t need a repeat of last time.”

“I will be your dress’s bodyguard.” I raised my arm and then three fingers. “Scout’s honor.”

“But you were never in the scouts.”

Leaning down, I murmured, “Then I swear on your perfect, spankable ass that I’ll protect your dress.”

She sucked in a breath. “Nolan, behave.”

Chuckling, I stood up again. “Fine. Now, come on. I want to introduce you to a few people.”

And so I took her to meet some of my fellow co-stars, a director, and even a baseball player.

Katie charmed them all, easily. And as the minutes ticked by, my tension eased. Maybe, just maybe, without Wendy around, things would go smoothly.

Katie would finally see she could fit into this part of my life, too.

My hopes of telling Katie how I felt and her feeling the same increased by the second.

Chapter Thirty-Three

Katie

Abby: We’re going to be late. Rafe got lost.

Me: Oh no! Are you on the right track now?

Abby: No. He accidentally pulled out to the wrong side of the road and we got pulled over. Luckily, he got off with a warning, but he still won’t let me drive. Stubborn ass.

Me: Okay, that’s a lot to take in. You’ll have to explain later. He should let you drive.

Abby: I know! But he won’t. I’m working on it, though. Come hell or high water, I’m going to this damn event.

Me: Be safe. I’ll wait out front so we can go in together.

Abby: You don’t have to do that!

Me: Nolan is probably running around with his head cut off. I’ll wait, and we can make a grand entrance.

Abby: If you’re sure.

Me: I am. Now, convince Rafe to let you drive. And let me know when you arrive.

Walking in with Rafe and Abby had been intense. I couldn’t ask Abby for details until later, when we were alone, but clearly getting lost, pulled over, and finding this place had caused some major friction between the pair.
