That would be a much better way to ring in the New Year.

Jenn appeared and cleared her throat, breaking the moment. I frowned at her. “What?”

“Don’t bark at me. You know we have to go to this party. If you two don’t show up, Wendy will say it’s because Katie’s afraid of her. Then she’ll make up more rumors, putting even more of a spotlight on Katie, and you don’t want that, do you?”

Fucking Wendy Webster.

Katie spoke before I could. “And after all this work to get ready, I want to go. I’ve never been to a fancy party for New Year’s before. Usually I hang out at a friend’s house or go to the shindig at The Watering Hole.”

I kissed the back of Katie’s hand again. “If you want to go, then we will.” I searched her eyes. “But if at any time you want to leave, just say the word and I’ll get us out of there, ASAP.”

She nodded. “Okay.”

“Good.” I guided her to the bottom of the stairs and took out a large, square box. “But first, this is for you.”

She frowned as she took it, opened it, and gasped.

Inside lay a diamond and sapphire necklace. As soon as I’d seen the blue stones, they’d reminded me of Katie’s eyes.

“Nolan, I can’t accept this.”

“Don’t be silly, of course you can. What kind of fairy godmother would I be if I sent you to a ball without a dress and jewelry befitting a princess?”

She laughed. “You’re my fairy godmother?”

“Why not?”

“Then where are your wings and wand?”

Leaning over, I whispered, “I’m undercover and don’t want to give myself away. Otherwise, everyone will start asking for wishes.”

Katie snorted. “You’re silly.”

I winked. “I try.” I took the necklace. “Will you wear it for me?”

After a second, she nodded.

“Turn around.”

She did, and I laid the piece over her chest and brought the clasp to the back of her neck. Once I secured it, I leaned down and nuzzled her skin just above the metal. And again.

Katie leaned back against me, and I moved a hand to one of her breasts.

Jenn spoke up. “Ahem. Could you two at least wait until you’re alone in the car? If Nolan starts shedding his clothes, I might be scarred for life.”

She gave a fake shudder, and I shook my head. “You should’ve been an actor.”

Katie walked away from me, and despite how it felt wrong, I let her. “Come on, Nolan. I’m curious to see everyone and get another glimpse of your life.”

After threading my fingers through hers, we exited the house, and I helped her into the car. Jenn and her wife would arrive separately, so we were alone.

As soon as the car was underway and the partition was up, I took Katie’s hand again. She smiled at me and plucked at her skirt.

I studied her. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m nervous. I shouldn’t be, given how amazing I look. Seriously, whoever that guy was who did my hair, he can do miracles.”

“Jorge is one of the most in-demand hair stylists in town. I met him while filming a movie a few years ago.” I tugged the curled section over her chest and watched it bounce back up.
