She swatted my hand away. “Don’t do that. It takes more product that I’d like to get it to hold the curl.”

“But it’s just begging for me to tease it.” I reached to tug it again, but Katie laughed and moved away.

“Stop, Nolan. You can do that after the party, and much more, but not before.”

In our text messages, we’d danced around finally having sex after the party. “Provided you don’t fall asleep again.”

She stuck her tongue out at me. “We’ll see. I’m used to country hours.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Says the woman who spends a lot of Saturday nights at a bar with her friends.”

“Hey, Sunday is one of my days off. And usually there’s dancing and alcohol involved, which both keep me alert.”

I reached for her curls again, but at her narrowed eyes, I grabbed her hand instead. “There’ll be dancing and drinks at the party, so fingers crossed, it keeps you awake. Because I don’t want to just dream about you tonight—I want to worship you in my bed for real.”

Her gaze turned heated as she said, “Maybe on the way home, we can warm up for the main event.”

At the thought of tossing up her skirt and eating her sweet pussy, my dick stood at attention. My voice was hoarse as I said, “Tease.”

She grinned. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

Laughing, I reached and tugged her curl. But I kissed her gently afterward to quell any protest.

I was about to haul her into my lap when someone rapped on the window. I sighed. “We’re here.”

“The wait will make it that much better, Nolan. Just keep remembering that.”

“And I’m going to get you back for that remark, baby. You think you’ve seen me tease that hard little clit? You haven’t seen anything yet.”

She squirmed in her seat as her breathing picked up. “Now, who’s being the tease?”

There was some more rapping, and I scowled. “I suppose we’d better get this over with.”

But as I noticed the excitement in Katie’s gaze, my frustration faded. This was Katie’s first high-profile event. She deserved to enjoy herself and make memories she’d never forget, in a good way.

Once I exited the car and helped Katie out, cameras flashed and reporters asked questions. I tucked her arm into mine and whispered for her ears only, “It’s best to stop and smile for the cameras a few times along the carpet. That way, we’ll have flattering pictures. So when I stop, follow my lead. Okay?”

She nodded, and we walked down the red carpet. Even if it wasn’t a movie premiere, the host—and my friend—Zara Jones liked to make a statement.

When we stopped at a larger roped-off section set up for pictures, I smiled and Katie did the same. A reporter asked, “Is this your fiancée, Nolan?”

“Yes. But she’s standing right here, so how about you ask Katie questions related to her?”

Jenn had prepared Katie for this, but I still held my breath when the reporter asked, “Katie, how does it feel being the fiancée of someone so famous? It’s a long way from your family’s dairy farm.”

Katie’s smile never faltered. “Well, remember, I’ve known Nolan my whole life. He’s still just the boy who climbs trees and makes wishes, like when we were kids.”

“Nolan, what did you wish for most recently?”

“Health, happiness, and the best for my family.”

Another reporter shouted, “Katie, Katie! What will you say to Wendy Webster? She arrived a little before you.”

I tensed and waited to see if Katie needed my help.

She shrugged. “I guess we’ll see what happens, won’t we? She can say whatever she wants about me, but I don’t appreciate her harassing my future husband.”

For a beat, I forgot that our engagement was all pretend. I couldn’t remember the last time someone had wanted to protect me, at least not since I’d left Starry Hills.
