Page 10 of Spider and the Elf

My mouth salivated just thinking about them.

They were notorious for not staying still, which was why seeing them here did not startle me. No one knew where they came from or what world they were native to, although I couldn’t imagine them among the Vampires or Werewolves.

The sudden twitching of my ears and the scurrying of the newest kalai caused me to freeze, my eyes immediately searching for a body of water only to sink when I saw none around me.

A Spider emerged from behind the bushes. Spiky silver hair and silver eyes fixated on me, white lightning with a lilac glow crackling in those stormy pits. The owner of such bewitching features was even more beautiful as he gazed at me. He wore what every male Spider wore—skin-tight pants with the colour of their breed, and his were silver.

I almost shrank into myself.

Not again, I thought, keeping my eyes on the Velli. He wasn’t the same one from yesterday, but the fact that it was the same breed disturbed me.

My ears continued twitching. Without turning my back to the Spider in front of me, I turned my head slightly and looked over my right shoulder from the corner of my eye.

Two more Spiders came from behind me. They were all staring, eyes focused—two of them even ran their tongue across their top teeth.

One was a Velli.

One was an Eluu.

And one was a Karru.

The Karru seemed like the one I didn’t need to worry about as much. He looked bored despite studying me with those curious light grey eyes that had a mild tinge of blue, his hair neither ashy yellow nor subdued grey. The most mild breed unless provoked.

“Elf?” questioned the Velli, red lips smirking as he took a step closer, making my claws lengthen. Clever troublemaker.

“I’ve never seen one before,” added the Eluu, his head tipped to the side as he inspected me. He appeared cold and detached, his chilling white gaze sharp and hostile like a snow storm.

The Spiders watched me, their eyes observing every breath I took, every clench my fingers made despite doing my best to remain still. If I had a body of water near me, I wouldn’t be as frightened. But three against one…

“I heard they taste delicious.”

I bared my small fangs instinctively, my eyes narrowing at the Velli. They continued to watch, now seeming more intrigued. I didn’t stand a chance against three predators—one of them belonging to the second strongest breed—but that didn’t mean I’d let them kill me easily.

The Karru Spider shook his head and moved closer to me. “I demand the ribs.”

I spun on my feet and made to run, only to halt with a shriek when he was suddenly in front of me, a looming shadow blocking all light. I blinked and he was gone.

My breath caught in my throat when arms wrapped around me from behind; one around my middle and one around my shoulders, nearly crushing me into the large, solid body.

He was trying to immobilise me.

And he raised me high off the ground, my feet dangling in the air.

I clenched my teeth when the Spider’s nose skimmed up my neck and to my hair, and I shivered when he breathed in my scent. His arms around me tightened until breathing became painful.

When his warm tongue stroked my neck, my blood grew cold. My small body began to quake, my eyes watering as I thought of every possible way he could hurt me, kill me.

The other two Spiders moved. When they got too close to what my instincts could handle, I began thrashing, sounds of distress echoing in the back of my throat.

Then I was snatched from the one behind me and held by a different Spider.

My blood rushed inside me, my heart thudding painfully against my rib cage when the Velli tried to sink his deadly fangs into my left shoulder. I managed to slip from his hold, narrowly missing those brutal knives, but they scraped my neck, breaking skin and drawing blood. Clawed hands reached for me, and I ducked at the last possible moment, gasping for air.

I couldn’t get far. The three of them closed in around me and blocked any possible exit with their enormous bodies. I didn’t know what scared me more; the large fangs, the long claws, the bulging muscles, or the endless height of each of them.

Or the brutal way they’d end me. One of them wanted my ribs, another wanted my legs, and the other was intent on getting to my shoulders. They would claw me apart.

The Velli flashed his deadly fangs at me, the white lightening in his silver eyes lashing like whips.
