Eon sighed, and it sounded amused. “I won’t take long.”

“No!” I looked at him quickly, holding one of his large wrists with my hands. “Take your time, I… I’ll wait for you.”

I didn’t want him to rush just because I would be lonely or because I didn’t want to imagine him ending another creature’s life. It would be selfish and unfair, especially when he hadn’t complained about my chosen food earlier.

After another smile and more reassurance, he went one way and I went the other.

It didn’t take long for me to find the place Eon had mentioned, and there weren’t justsometrees, there weremanytrees and shrubs with countless fruitsandvegetables. It reminded me of home, of the gardens that grew delicious plants that could be turned into so many different dishes. But not here. Here I would have to settle for the simple things because there were no earth Elves, no one to create the necessary tools for me, but that didn’t bother me.

I surrounded myself with tomatoes, various berries, and some figs. To my shock, the plants tastedmuchbetter here than they did back home—my old home. It was strange because this land wasn’t meant to bear such sweet things, but if animals were able to survive here, then surely even edible plants could.

That was how Eon found me after a while: happily munching on my own food with a wide grin and a jolly swing to my movements.

He was grinning, his eyes scanning my occupied hands and puffy cheeks before his face contorted with a shudder. Swallowing, I gave him a wide, sunny smile.

He walked closer and lowered himself to lift me in his arms. My own curled around his neck, and I fused myself to him, higher, almost sitting in his massive arms. Drawing his face towards me, I rubbed our skin together, humming as our scents mixed.

I hadn’t seen my companions yet, but I felt their presence nearby. I assumed now that I was with my mate, they wanted to watch over me from afar. It was strange, not constantly having little feet resting on my shoulders or my hair, not having beaks picking on my skin or wings fluttering around me.

But I didn’t feel lonely.

“Mine, mine, all mine,” I murmured, my eyes closing blissfully as my scent mingled with his.

He lowered us near the waterfall, the noise loud yet distant as I sat on his lap, forcing him back to reduce our height difference.

I grabbed his face and dragged him to me, our lips barely touching, eyes never closing. And I wascontent. I was content with the way he gazed at me, lips tugging upwards in a carefree smile, allowing me to do as I wanted.

And when our lips finally met, it was like bathing under the sun. Warm. Gentle. Languid.

Eon was everything. He was warm and patient, careful but playful, his lips moving against mine in a slow dance, a dance that soon became teeth and tongues, licks and gentle nips and smiles.

He twitched, and then it was a soft tremble that shook his entire body. Eon stiffened beneath me.

I drew back, gasping softly against his red lips. “You don’t have to stop him.”

His red-tinged gaze fixated on me, strong and intense as he clenched his jaw and narrowed his eyes. They were changing, red spilling into the white like ink.

“He might hurt you,” he whispered, his voice strained, his taut muscles rippling under me.

I shook my head, drawing him close again so I could place my lips on his jaw. “I trust him.”

The red in his eyes stilled. It began to fade as if it wasn’t there, but then it surged with speed and force that Eon’s eyes had disappeared before I could blink again.

“I trust you,” I repeated, looking away from those burning pits that pinned me in place, silent yet dangerous.

Too silent.

As if he didn’t believe me.

Despite his violent nature, I liked En as well. He might have believed that I preferred Eon over him, but that wasn’t the case anymore.

I wanted them both, and I accepted them both.

Because being with both of them felt right. Despite them being predators, despite them being an enemy to my people, both Eon and En felt right and safe no matter our differences.

And if En didn’t believe my words, then he would believe my actions.

“En.” I directed my hands towards his face, brushing the skin over his sharp cheekbones. My hands did not shake, and he noticed. “It’s late outside.”
