Eon’s brows furrowed as he tracked every item I chose. His gaze fell to my exposed legs, then rose to meet mine with an arched brow. Our hands still laced together, he gently squeezed mine and tugged me closer to his side.

“You chose longer skirts and dresses.”

I nodded, biting my bottom lip as a shy smile bloomed on my face. “Because I am mated now. Mated and pleased with the male I chose.”

Eon’s grip tightened, ruby eyes flaring with a small flame. His gaze smouldered, voice low and husky when he murmured to me, “Is that why you no longer fight me when I expose your pretty ears?”

My cheeks warmed.

The corners of his mouth tilted up. Bending his body, he ran the tip of his nose along the curve of my jaw to my ear, warm lips caressing the shell as he whispered, “Does that mean I won’t see your pretty legs again?”

I shivered, but my smile still bloomed into a grin as I leaned into him. “You can see them all you want when we are home.”

He made a deep, rolling noise in his chest, something like a purr and a groan.

The Fairy had collected everything I pointed at and folded them all into a basket. When it was time to pay, I panicked, realising I hadn’t brought anything with me to exchange.

I turned to Eon, opening my mouth to tell him to leave it for another day, only to freeze when I saw him bringing his other hand to his mouth. His lips parted and his fangs lengthened, then they punctured the flesh of his palm. Eon clenched his fist, quickly guiding his hand over to the jar that the Fairy had presented to him.

“Half a jar, please,” she said, her voice bubbly and her eyes bright as she stared at the blood pouring inside. Her hands glowed as she forced the liquid to freeze.

Eon made a sound of acknowledgement, and when his blood stopped dripping because of his wound healing, I watched as his claws extended and dug into his palm again, reopening the skin.

I flinched, averting my eyes and squeezing his arm tighter, plastering myself to him. He tensed beside me, and I sensed the intensity of his gaze on the back of my head while his blood still dripped.

“Thank you very much!” the Fairy said, and I still didn’t look at them. “Do come again, please!”

I will never bring him again,I thought, swallowing hard.

I didn’t understand what it meant, why he had to pay with his blood, but I said nothing as we walked to another stall. My excitement dimmed. I was more reluctant to tell him what I wanted and what I needed because the more I chose, the more I said, the more he paid and the more hebled.

The large basket in his free hand held various items: sandals, clothes, blankets, jars filled with colourful pastes, and items I didn’t have enough time to see clearly.

All for me.

All traded with his blood.

“It’s how they want me to pay,” he said after a while of silence, being too aware of my unvoiced distress.

I held him tighter, lips trembling at the memory of my mate bleeding just to please me. “Why?”

“They need my blood to make most of the blends and potions they own.” My eyes widened and I gaped at him. “My saliva has instant healing properties, and I know my blood is exceptionally powerful.”

“Are you saying they…”

“Get their magic from me?” He glanced down at me, a smile growing on his lips again. “Yes.”

“Can you show me?!” I nearly tripped had it not been for him pulling me closer. I didn’t care; I could have cracked my skull and I still wouldn’t have been bothered because I was thrilled to know more about him. “That’s amazing—you’reamazing! You—you're essentially made of magic!”

His smile widened, ruby eyes appearing to glow as I raved about him. I pressed myself closer and held him tighter, staring at him as if he was the rare Blue Moon itself.

“Keleth is something I created,” he added, his eyes blinking at me in a way that had my heart stuttering and my feet stumbling once again. Eon snickered at my clumsiness as he steadied me a second time.

“Him?!” I squealed. To know that Eon had created that majestic creature, dark fur and blazing eyes and commanding presence, made me beam. My eyes probably shimmered more vividly than the lanterns around us.

Eon’s mesmerising laugh halted, so did his feet. I lost my balance again at the abrupt lack of movement. The arm that I was holding dragged me towards him and kept me close, the temperature of his skin rising for a brief moment.

I looked up at him with a frown, silently questioning why his eyes had hardened and his stance had become guarded. Protective.
