“He’s by the river,” Keia’s voice said in my head.

I nodded before I walked to the nearby river, relying on my senses. A grin split my face when I finally found him.

Snow was sitting on a rock, his beautiful wings tucked behind him.

“I wonder why a lovely Fairy is all alone during an event like this,” I teased.

He turned his face towards me with a small smile. “Kenia,” he whispered, his green eyes gazing at me softly.

I swayed on my feet, back and forth as I laced my fingers behind my back.

“You look… magical.” His wings twitched, and I grinned, my cheeks warming.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, stepping closer to him. “The ritual is that way.”

“The ritual isn’t of my interest.”

He lowered his head, his cheeks tinting a faint red.

“Why not? There will be food, music, dancing, food!” I exclaimed. “What else could you possibly wish for?”

“You.”

I blinked, my grin falling.

“I cannot forget about this blue-haired, blue-eyed lady Elf who is as clueless about social etiquette as I am, and I wish for her to be my mate,” Snow confessed, his green eyes glittering with a longing gleam.

My chest pinched. I didn’t want to lose this friend. “Snow, I—”

“Even if we are both not at the mating age yet, being with you is what I want.”

“I can’t,” I whispered, my voice small, all that previous excitement dimmed in the face of his hope.

“Why not?” He frowned, but I heard the defeat in his voice, and it made me wince.

“Because.” I breathed in, then breathed out again, my fingers trembling because he would be the first I’d admit this to. “I want another male.”

Snow lowered his gaze to the ground and gave me a slow nod. Even though he tried to shield it from me, his hurt was in the slump of his shoulders, the downward curling of his lovely wings as he held himself away.

My fingers curled into fists by my sides. I wanted to reach for him. I wanted to wrap my arms around him and hold him tight, whisper reassurances to make him smile again. But doing so would only hurt him more after what I’d told him.

His wings twitched. Snow’s gaze shot up and found mine again, the green quickly taking over the white in his eyes as he moved towards me. If his glowing green eyes hadn’t been enough, my skin suddenly tingling told me he was calling for his magic. Yet just as quickly as his eyes began to glow, they dimmed and returned to normal. A soft gasp escaped him.

Frowning, I tilted my head then stood rigid when his hand reached up and gently brushed my hair away from my left shoulder, baring my neck as well. I clenched my hands and jaw to not flash my teeth because he wasn’t trying to expose my ears, but the gesture still made me tense.

With light hands, Snow urged my head to the side without exposing my ears before his eyes widened, his body growing still once again.

I caught Keia behind Snow and stared at her. What’s wrong with my neck?

“You’ve got bruises,” she replied, and I caught her grimace.

Bruises? I couldn’t recall hurting myself.

“Who gave you those marks?” Snow questioned, his voice low.

“Marks? What are you talking about?” I stared at him, but the question was to him and Keia.

“You’ve got territorial marks on the left side of your neck,” he answered, then his watchful eyes met mine. “I’ve seen them before. They are given by mates.”
