My bottom lip quivered. Tears threatened to blur my sight.

I turned to leave, but the panther growled a warning once again. “You cannot leave. They know you’re here.”

Hope should not have eased the pressure in my chest.

Turning back to face the panther, I nearly gaped when he bowed his head to me.

I took hesitant steps towards him, and when I was close enough, I dared to offer my hand to him in greeting.

The panther pressed his head forward, allowing my hand to stroke between his ears. Deep purrs rumbled from him, and my lips stretched into a giddy smile, my shoulders slumping a little.

Just as I opened my mouth to ask for his name, my ears began twitching.

Tensing, I looked up in time to see a shadow above me, then it landed behind me with a loud thud. I twirled to face the threat and my eyes almost jumped out of my face.

A female Spider.

She was bigger than me—huge—but she was smaller than Eon. She was a Cyrva, eyes blazing red and long cherry hair close to being on fire.

Close to beingon fire.

Her eyes were different from Eon’s; hers were completely burning like the books had shown. Nothing but an endless pit of flames and fury.

The hostility in her body and the hair slowly turning to flames—she was angry.

And she was movingtowards me.

The panther unleashed a thundering snarl at the female Spider. I shrieked when a body dropped in front of me, the ground shuddering with a loud boom.

A large, broad back stood in front of me, tense and rippling with muscles, freezing me on the spot. Eon’s form covered me completely—I couldn’t see the female Spider, and I knew she couldn’t see me.

“It’sher,isn’t it?”

To know all that aggression was aimed at me chilled my blood. And to know that if it wasn’t for Eon shielding me, she would be ripping me to shreds—from my thin skin down to my trembling bones. My blood would be her bath, if she didn’t wish to drink it.

This was Eon’s kind—how he should be.

But instead of finding an escape, I moved closer to him, my chest nearly brushing his hard back.

“She is mine,” Eon hissed, the sharp, sibilant sound tickling my ears unpleasantly.

“She’s an Elf!” I flinched as she yelled. “You can’t haveher. She is not one of ours.Iam.”

“I wantno onebut her!”

Maddening silence followed his loud declaration. While it left me a little stunned, the tension coiling around me had the fine hair on my body standing stiff.

I poked my head to the side, meeting the female Spider’s fiery eyes. They narrowed at me, and I gulped.

She curled her upper lip back. “You wanther?” The fury in her voice was unmistakable.

“No one but her.”

His lack of hesitation filled my chest with warmth, lightness, something pleasant that tugged the corners of my mouth up into a shy, giddy smile as I drifted closer to his back.

Fiery pain erupted in my ears like thin needles slicing into my brain when the female roared, the sound sharp and high-pitched and brutal. I crumbled to the ground with a strangled cry as I tried to shield my sensitive ears. Tears pricked my eyes, but just as suddenly as it had come, the screaming and pain were gone—so abrupt that it disoriented me.
