My ears twitched before the grass rustled behind me.

Flinging an arm out to raise a spear of water beside me, I whirled and flexed my fingers to defend myself. My next inhale caught in my throat. The water splashed to the ground, wetting my feet and legs. I froze, feeling the blood leave my head as I met Ayen’s green gaze.

“You… you f-followed me?” I breathed, voice so quiet and small it was a soft gasp.

He clenched his jaw, and even though he looked tense and agitated, his eyes were panicked and pleading. “I had no choice.”

“You had no choice?!” I yelled, exposing my small fangs as the stored power within me stirred. “You had no choice but tofollowme?! How could you do this to me?!”

“I was following your brother’s orders!” he yelled back, his eyes turning cold and hard as he took a defensive stance. “Stepping onto this repulsive land was notmychoice!”

“Don’t you—”

A chill swept across the land.

A violent shiver shuddered through me. Ayen had the same reaction as goosebumps rose on our skin.

Fog crept around us slowly, like a stalking predator, turning the once clear and warm land murky and icy.

My pulse drummed frantically, its echoes loud in my ears. It grew cold. So cold my teeth clacked even when I clenched them. The air became thicker, heavier to breathe, making my lungs expand and contract in a startled rush.

Gulping, I turned my head carefully. My eyes climbed slowly, panic rattling my bones, and there, standing outside his cave, was Eon. I knew he was furious because of the fire burning in his eyes, slithering down his arms and gathering at his palms.

Ayen gasped behind me, his beating heart ringing in my ears as loud as mine.

Eyes fixed on Eon, I watched as he jumped from his cave. He landed with a resounding boom, the floor shaking and rumbling. I lost my balance and stumbled back into Ayen before quickly putting distance between us, keeping him behind me.

When the ground stilled, the fog had grown into a fine, translucent film in the air.

“Kenia—”

“Don’t move,” I ordered Ayen quietly, keeping my eyes on Eon. “Don’t even make a sound. Leave him to me.”

Eon’s blazing eyes observed me, his head slowly tilting. His nose scrunched up, eyes narrowed and lips curled back, exposing large and sharp fangs—his fangs which could cut through my flesh and bones without any struggle.

I knew he saw Ayen. His fire and behaviour could not be caused by me, a creature he consistently allowed to be on his land.

“Watch me,” I said, calm and slow, remaining as still as the air around us.

His sharp gaze moved towards Ayen, causing his fire to intensify. Red began to steadily take over the white in his eyes, the flames spreading until all colour wasalmostcompletely gone.

“Eon,” I called softly, my shoulders losing some of their stiffness when he looked at me. His eyes held me down with their intensity, but I steeled myself and gazed directly into them even though tears were already stinging my eyes. “Watch me.”

His gaze fixed on me, still burning and still radiating such brutal, choking violence. I waited for a few moments, holding his gaze, making sure he wouldn’t stray from mine before I took slow, small steps towards him. Those blazing eyes watched my every move, and I had the sense that he was even listening to every breath I took and every beat my heart pulsed.

Using the stored power within me, I willed my skin to cool down before I reached out and placed my palms on his abdomen, attempting to soothe him. Just as I’d expected, his skin was hot.

Eon’s attention on me broke when Ayen moved behind me.

A ferocious snarl thundered around me, the sound so foreign and fierce it made me recoil and jerk back from him. It froze the blood in my veins and had the trees shrieking—no, not the trees. Whatever creatures dwelled in their branches, now taking flight to escape his wrath.

“Trespasser.”

My heart dropped.

I seized Eon’s blazing hands, yelping but not letting go. Despite how cold my skin felt at that moment, his fire was strong, unrelenting. Tears that were dormant before began to flow freely, my vision blurring as smoke danced over my flesh.

It wasn’t just his fire. It was hisvoice.
