Page 66 of Spider and the Elf

I breathed in sharply, my heart drumming in a rush. My fingers gestured for the water to aim at him, but even I saw my control trembling.

Before I could choose between my mate and my friend, Eon inhaled sharply behind me just before someone new hopped onto his land.

If I’d thought the air was icy before, it was absolutely deadly now.

Sharp and thin, it sliced my throat and into my lungs like frost-coated needles. My throat ached, my chest heaving as I dropped my control on the water and took a small, trembling step back.

Another Cyrva Spider. His features were similar to Eon—the same cherry-red hair with black roots and the same mark, but something was extremely different about this one.

His eyes.

Unlike Eon’s, this one’s eyes were the two swirling pits of fiery hell unique to the Cyrva breed.

They landed on Ayen, then me, his blood-red lips curling up into a smirk that sent chills down my spine.

When his attention moved to Eon, I mentally told Keia to take Ayen and hide. The fewer Elves, the better.

“Elf?” the new Spider asked, a strange edge I couldn’t decipher in his tone.

Eon’s hand reached for me and pushed me behind him, but not completely hiding me from the other Spider’s eyes.

“What are you doing onmyland?” Eon seethed, his voice icy and hard. This new Spider was also an intruder, but something about the way he spoke to Eon hinted to them knowing each other.

The stranger looked at me, his head tilting as the fire in his eyes crackled and burned brighter. Eon tensed further, his fists clenching in a way that spoke of anticipation.

“Trespasser,” the stranger said, his tone dark and guttural. It had me cowering behind Eon, my spirit recognising him as a predator—recognising the cruelty he possessed.

His blazing gaze landed on me again. He took a step forward, exposing his sharp, deadly fangs at me as his features contorted into a murderous look. “Elf.”

It only took one step from the other Spider to set Eon off. He pushed me aside before he went for the stranger, letting out a thunderoussnarland aiming for the other’s throat. Similar as the two were, Eon appeared slightly smaller, an indication that he was younger.

But he was able to pin the Spider down effortlessly at first, brutal claws extended and buried deep in his opponent’s neck, fangs extended and bared as he snarled in the other’s face. But when the other Spider regained his focus, he was able to grab Eon easily.

Eon didn’t truly want to fight. He didn’t want to hurt the other Spider because if he did, his opponent would have been dead already. I’d seen him eradicate three Spiders at once, and there was also that time when anotherCyrvabacked down because he didn’t want to fight Eon.

He didn’t want to hurt this one.

But the other Spider had no problem hurting mine.

My eyes darted around, struggling to make sense of the situation. They were moving too fast for me to keep up, the sounds of hissing and flesh being struck the only things I could understand. The scent of blood and singed flesh burned my nose and drew bile up my throat. I shook, breathing raggedly.

So much violence. So much brutality.

Then I saw them.

Eon was pinned down by the other Spider who had a hand curled around his throat. Blood trickled down Eon’s chest, his expression both pained and furious. It didn’t look good, especially when I saw the fire that began to slide down the other Spider’s arm.

My heart dropped. Terror and panic and fierce protectiveness burst against my chest, and before I knew it, a destructive wave of water drowned the two fiery creatures, dousing their rage until all that remained was thick, blinding steam and a fit of violent coughing.

I panted, my left hand stretched in the direction of the pool and vibrating, waiting.

When the steam cleared enough for me to see them, the new Spider slowly turned his head towards me. The blaze in his eyes flared, and then he let out a low, blood-stopping rumble.

I blinked, ready to form a bubble of water around him to drown him.

But then he was before me.
