He let out a sound of mirth, then he was shaking.

Holding in his laughter.

My knees wobbled. Of all things he could have done next, he stepped back; as soon as he did, I dropped to the ground, my legs sprawled before me as if my energy had been drained from me.

The Spider’s gaze fell to my exposed legs. I watched in horror as he ran his tongue over his upper teeth.

He crouched, then slowly crawled towards me on the pads of his fingers and the front of his feet. My pulse quickened. I rushed to push myself away from him, only succeeding in pinning myself further against the tree trunk.

He’s going to eat me, he’s going to eat me, he’s going to eat—

His nose brushed my skin, and all the blood in me froze.

His hands were on the ground beside my thighs, close enough that they caressed my skin. My body quaked, the beating of my heart drowning all other sounds.

It was a miracle he had let me live this long, if I had to be honest. Death seemed inevitable.

“Will I see you again tomorrow?” he whispered.

I gulped, shaking my head. “No, I-I promise you won’t.”

His closeness suffocated me. He radiated strength and danger, and it only made the idea of death truer by the second.

A low chuckle rumbled deep in his throat. “That wasn’t the answer I wanted.”

He finally drew back, and I breathed out in relief, refusing to look at him.

“I want to see you back here tomorrow. Do you promise?” His tone left no room for an argument.

Wide-eyed, I nodded repeatedly. In his and my dreams!

“Say the words,” he demanded, getting closer to me again.

“I p-promise!”

His blood-red lips stretched into a victorious smirk. He stepped away, and I let out another loud exhale of relief before hurriedly getting to my feet, looking at Keia who was stuck to the trunk of the tree, too high for me to reach without climbing.

“I’ll keep her with me. That way, you will come to me tomorrow no matter what.”

I gaped, blinking before I found my words. “Let her go!”

The Spider studied me, and the intensity of his gaze made my bones tense again.

He tugged at the thread that wasstillattached to my wrist, pulling me close to him before he easily tore it from my skin. When it was no longer on me, he snaked one thick arm around me while the other hand gripped my left cheek.

I stood still, my pulse picking its beat again. I inhaled sharply when his hand moved my blue hair back, baring my left shoulder, neck, and ear. The forced exposure of my ear by an unfamiliar male had my instincts screeching. I squirmed in his arms, baring my small fangs in a display of agitation.

The Spider ducked his head until his warm breath teased my pointy left ear.

“Don’t scream.”

Sharp pain stung my left earlobe before I could have questioned him. I tensed and pressed my lips together tightly, my eyes watering before I placed my hands on his solid chest and tried to shove him away. When he pulled back, I saw his fangs—so much larger and sharper than mine. One of them was stained red.

I slammed a finger on my left earlobe, feeling a hole there slightly bigger than Keia’s eyes.

“What di-did you do?” I gasped, hysteria bubbling inside me.

He didn’tlinkme to him because I would’ve felt a cold liquid flowing with my blood and an unbreakable pull towards him. He didn’t feed on my blood, either. He just… bit me?
