After about an hour, I finished my set on the hammer strength machine and I feel just about as relieved as a man can be. But there’s more frustration building that comes from a different source and I hate that I can’t stop thinking about her.

“Seems like we had the same idea,” a familiar voice says behind me.

I look up into the mirror in front of me to see my brother standing there with his shirt thrown over his shoulder.

I take a gulp of my water.

“Hollis told me not to talk to you,” I say.

Kylan chuckles as I process how that must sound at loud.

“Seems like she’s the only one you listen to these days,” he tries to joke but I feel so much regret bubble in me when I think about my actions.

“Listen,” I attempt to start but Kylan beats me to it.

“I get it. You’re mad. You feel taken advantage of. But you can’t let yourself get like that, Jaxon. It sucks for everyone.”

“I know,” I say.

“And I think you need to apologize to Hollis. She really came to your rescue back there,” he reminds me, and I hate that he’s bringing her up, but I love that he’s protecting her from my fuck ups.

“Thanks,Dad. I’m sure I can manage,” I bite back sarcastically, and he rolls his eyes.

“Take it easy on Mom when you talk to her please. I really need you to understand where she’s coming from.” He walks away without so much as another word or glance. I reach for my phone to see that it’s already four in the afternoon. That means I woke up way later than I thought I did. I run a hand down my face and head back to clean myself off.

I know I need to talk to everyone. But I only wanna start with one person.

I see that she hasn’t reached out yet, but I know that it’s my move to make right now. So, after the gym, I run back home to change so I can make my way to her.

I’m rendered shocked though, approaching my drive to see that my motorcycle is parked in the front. I almost forgot that it was pretty much confiscated from me yesterday, but I wonder how the fuck it got back here.

I get closer to see that there’s a note taped to one of the handles and my heart does a little flip when I see it’s Hollis’ handwriting.

You promised to always be there for me. If you can keep working on that promise, then I promise to always have your back. XO, Hollis <3

This fucking girl.

My face heats up in a blush that makes me hard just thinking about her riding my bike but then it melts into anger when I think about the hoops I made her jump through. It’s what sets off my race to get upstairs and get changed in order to get to her.

I need to make this right.

I pull up to her parents’ house not an hour later. Ky told me that she’d be here, which he heard from Jaelynn. Initially, I just wanted directions to her apartment but I’m okay with coming back here for now.

The sun is already setting behind the house when I walk up to the front door. Just as I’m about to knock, the door opens.

“Jax,” her father says to me in a low tone.

“Mr. Mendoza.” I shake his hand.

“Hollis is upstairs in the guest room, we were just heading out for dinner,” her mother says to me as they step out of the door and onto the porch.

I nod and walk past them but stop and turn before they leave completely.

“I’m sorry about my disturbance last night. It was totally uncalled for and I acted immaturely. I was mad and I shouldn’t have come here to let out my anger. It won’t happen again.” I look them right in the eyes as I talk because I want them to see how fucking stupid I was for causing that kind of chaos.

Hollis’ mom smiles and her dad blinks at me.

“Oh, I know it won’t happen again, Son. She smacked you hard enough to get that through your head,” he quips but in a sincere, stern, and loving way.
