"We should also become invisible," Ryk suggested, and I nodded, letting my magic do its thing as I took us to the hospital. As soon as we got there, I closed my eyes and scanned our surroundings.

"They were here," I said when I sensed traces of the dark soul left behind. "They're gone now."

"Can you sense where they went?" Nico asked, and I nodded.

"Then you and Ryk go find them. I'll stay here and see if I can find any clues," he said, and I nodded. Bending forward, I pressed a kiss to the corner of his mouth.

"Be careful," I said, and he smiled up at me as he nodded. Ryk threw his arms around Nico and gave him a tight hug and a kiss before stepping back and taking my hand.

"Be good," Nico told Ryk, who merely grinned and shot back.

"When am I not?"

I used my magic to take us in the direction I could sense traces of the dark soul leading toward, and they took us all over the city, though they seemed to be steadily heading toward the edge of the city.

Ryk's phone started pinging again and again, so I let his hand go so he could check it. His brows shot up as he read whatever message he'd received, and he glanced up at me. "Nico says he found a displaced soul in the hospital."

"Which means the dark soul now has a body. Fuck!" I swore, and Ryk patted my back.

"Don't worry. We'll find them. The Otherworlders are at the hospital now, and Nico said to call if we needed backup."

Nodding, I took his hand again. "Let's go before they take off."

We reached the edge of the city a few minutes later, and I stopped short when I sensed the remnants of a very familiar aura. Demon aura.

"Mammon was here," I murmured, and Ryk's eyes widened before he closed them.

"Shit, you're right," he grunted as his eyes snapped open and scanned our surroundings.

"But he's gone now," he said, and I sighed.

"And so is the dark soul," I said, then turned visible and corporeal again so I could kick a nearby tree. "Fuck!" If we'd been a little faster, if I'd sensed the dark soul a little sooner, we could've had them.

"Hey," Ryk said, placing his hand on my chest. "Take a deep breath."

"We don't need to breathe," I reminded him, and he chuckled.

"I know, but still. Do it for me. And Dakota. He's probably listening to us, remember?"

Oh, I'd forgotten all about that. "Sorry about all the swearing, Dakota," I said, then took a deep breath, which made Ryk smile. Honestly, I could do a lot more to get that smile out of Ryk. He wasn't stingy with his smiles by any means, and yet I always felt like a damn winner when I made him smile.

"Do you feel better?" Ryk asked, and I nodded, though I didn't tell him it was because of his smile and not the breathing exercise.

"How about we head back to the hospital and meet up with the others? I'm sure we'll figure something out," Ryk suggested, and I nodded reluctantly. There was no way Mammon and the dark soul would return here, but I still wanted to stay there. It would be a waste of time, though, so I took Ryk's hand and let him use his magic to get us to the hospital, returning to my invisible and incorporeal form—so a human wouldn't accidentally touch an invisible me and freak out—since the hospital was a pretty crowded place.

"Star, Ryk, you're okay!" Nico said, rushing over to us as soon as we appeared in the empty room. Well, it was empty of humans.

"We're fine, Nico," I assured him, then turned to Reece as he approached us, and bowed my head.

"I couldn't find them in time. I'm sorry," I said, and Ryk scoffed.

"We couldn't," he said, emphasizing the we. Well, that was true, but I was the one who'd sensed them. If I'd done it a little earlier, we could've captured them, but I'd been too distracted.

"It's okay, Star. We never expected them to be easy to capture. You'll get more chances, I'm sure. Right now, our objective is to keep the residents of Mistvale, especially the children, safe," Reece said, and I frowned.

"The kids? What do they have to do with any of this?" I asked, and Nico gave me a look that said I should already know the answer to that. Uh-oh, was this a discussion I'd slept through?

"Last time when the dark souls tried to possess people in the human realm, they'd targeted supes. They'd also used supe children to create powerful dark magic potions that would've allowed them to possess some very strong supes if they'd succeeded. Some of those kids live in Mistvale, and I'm worried they might try to kidnap them or do worse if they feel the need to create more," Reece explained, and I faintly remembered hearing about this before.
