“Yeah, I am.”

“Alright, man. I’ll talk to you soon. Answer the phone if I call you.”

“Got it.”

We hung up, and I tossed my cell onto the bed and picked up the room phone to set up everything for my day with Kayla.

“That massage was amazing,” Kayla said as we walked out to our private cabana by the pool. “Thank you.”

The snacks and champagne I’d ordered were waiting for us, as well as the swimsuits I’d requested from Debbie, Kayla’s aunt. Unfortunately, it was a little too cold to use the pool, but the hot tub was always an option.

“You’re welcome. I’m glad we have another day to spend together.” Knowing that we’d go our separate ways in less than twenty-four hours didn’t sit well with me, but I tried to push that out of my mind and focus on the woman next to me.

She turned and rested her head on her hand. “Me too.”

“So, what’s next for you?”

“First thing is finding a new job. Beyond that, I have no clue.”

“You worked at a hospital, right?” I asked, since she’d only mentioned it briefly on the beach when we met.

She bobbed her head. “Yeah, I worked as a labor and delivery nurse. I’d love to find something in the same field.”

“You never mentioned why you got fired.”

She let out a mirthless laugh.

“That was probably rude of me to ask. You don’t have to answer.”

“No, it’s fine. Remember the ex-boyfriend?”

I frowned. Hearing about the guy she’d been seeing wasn’t exactly the conversation I wanted to have, but I was curious about what he had to do with her losing her job. “Yeah.”

“He was a doctor at the same hospital.”

“Was dating him against the rules or something?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

She grimaced. “They accused me of asking for special favors because of my relationship with him.”

My eyes widened. We may have only known each other for twenty-four hours, but she didn’t seem like the type to use someone else for personal gain.

“I didn’t do it, if that’s what you’re wondering.”

I shook my head. “I didn’t think you did.”

Her head tilted to the side. “Really? You barely know me. How can you be sure?”

“You hesitated to agree to the massage this morning, even when I offered to pay. Someone who’s selfish enough to use the person they were dating would have jumped at the offer,” I explained, but I still had a question. “Why didn’t your ex say anything to defend you?”

“Did I not mention that his father is the chief of staff, and his family makes up like half of the board of directors?”

I chuckled. “Uh, no. You left that part out.”

“Well, it turns out he had a history of causing hospital drama. He didn’t want to upset Daddy, so he let me take the fall.”
