Kayla and I had a delicious dinner without a single pap in sight. When we returned to the hotel, I walked her back to her room, where we ended up back in bed. I wasn’t complaining. Sex with her was mind-blowing.

As I lay with her in my arms yet again, my phone rang. I didn’t want to get up to answer it. But after it stopped, it started immediately ringing again, and Tommy’s instruction to answer if he called ran through my head.

“I should answer that.” Kayla untangled her legs from mine, and I climbed out of bed. As expected, Tommy’s name was on the screen. “Hey, man. What’s up?”

“You need to get back to LA. I got an interview scheduled for you at nine tomorrow morning.”

“That early?”

“Does it matter? You were coming home tomorrow, anyway.”

“I guess I’ll see you in the morning. Send me the details.” I ended the call.

Kayla sat, pulling her knees to her chest. “Is everything okay?”

I let out a sigh. “Things are fine, but I need to leave. Tonight.”

“What? Why?” she questioned.

“My publicist set up an interview for me in the morning. I’d wait to go, but I can’t risk being late with traffic.” She frowned, and my chest ached, knowing I was the one making her upset this time. “I’m really sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. I’m just a little bummed. You made this trip a lot of fun.”

“Hey, San Diego isn’t that far from LA. We can make plans to get together,” I offered, not ready for this to be the end of whatever was going on between us.

She looked down. “Yeah, that sounds good.”

I tipped her head up and pressed my lips to hers. “I’m serious. I would really like to see you again.”

“I’d like that.” She beamed and then stood and wrapped herself in the complimentary robe before walking me to the door.

“Please call me when you get home tomorrow,” I said after we exchanged numbers.

“I will,” she promised.

I wrapped my hand around the back of her neck and pulled her in close. My lips brushed against hers, and I kissed her gently before deepening the kiss. When we finally pulled away, we were both breathless.

“We’ll talk soon.” I opened the door behind me.

“Okay. Please drive safe.”

I dipped down for one more quick kiss and then walked out the door. Walking away from her was one of the toughest things I’d done.

Chapter 9

Kayla

The door closed, and I flung myself onto the bed. Over the last two days, all of my crazy Blaine Roberts fantasies had come true. I’d tried to remind myself numerous times whatever happened between us was only temporary, and I couldn’t fall for him. Too bad my heart hadn’t listened.

At least we’d exchanged numbers. There was still a chance we’d see each other again, although the logical part of my brain believed that chance was slim. The physical distance between us wasn’t insurmountable, but our worlds were light years apart. The time we spent together only happened because we were both trying to escape our everyday lives. But could something really work out between a world-famous actor and an unemployed nurse? It was highly doubtful.

Understanding and accepting that things likely wouldn’t work out didn’t make things any easier. I couldn’t deny that Blaine and I had the kind of chemistry people only read about in romance novels. It was a connection I’d never experienced before, even when I thought I’d be in love. I wasn’t saying I loved Blaine, but there was something between us I genuinely believed could grow into more one day if we were ever given a chance.

I turned on the TV, needing something to distract me. Flipping through the channels, I stopped on a re-run of Friends. I grabbed the pillow that still smelled like Blaine and snuggled up with it, finding comfort in the cedarwood and bergamot scent.

After a while, I started to drift off, only to be awoken by a text notification. I rolled over and snagged my phone from the bedside table.

Simone: If you don’t answer, I’ll assume you’re still with Blaine. But I wanted to know if you wanted to come over when you get back into town. I have the day off.
